| So i'm trying to find the best possible 5w-50 oil. Redline and amsoil don't make 5w-50. So far it looks like my best bet is Mobil1. Are there any oil manufacturers that are better than Mobil1? |

| k well i'm going with mobil1 then.. where's the cheapest place to get it? |

I read somewhere recently that mobil 1 is no longer purely synthetic. Maybe just a rumor, but worthwhile doing some research. |

that is if you haven't sold your car by spring time. |

wow... ummm u haggle over oil? how old are you? How about you just go back to mom and dad, and ask for some money, cause obviously the money they gave you for education, you decide to go purchase drugs with.
First off, state everything about your car and what oil you used before.
Elf racing oil is good , Motul i think makes oil at that level. Always could go with factory recommended. |

I believe he drives a E46? So that would most likely call for a mobil 1 oil of some variety from the maker. |

| no just every time i've shopped at matrix motorsports in the past, there's been huge price descrepancies. maybe its better now, but in the past they'd want $1000 for an exhaust system that can be purchased elsewhere for $500. The reason i'm talking about haggling is because i'll probably buy a lot of oil, like maybe 30 quarts of it. So if its $20/quart vs $15/quart on 30 quarts it makes a fair difference. |

| i think most bmws use castrol from the factory, and i'm not a big fan of castrol as i've heard its not fully synthetic. I'm only concerned because the car sounds like crap when i first start it in winter now and I'd rather have a nice synthetic oil that helps it on cold start-ups. |

I use Motomaster Formula 1 Full Synthetic. No complaints from me. 3.7L in, 3.7L out and it flows just as good as when I put it in. I put it through some hard use drifting too and it holds up great.

i read that castrol syntec isn't even fully synthetic, but I think its what BMW uses anyway. I haven't tried Motul yet. I've been hearing good things about pennzoil platinum. |

isn't motomaster the official crappy tire brand? that kinda scares me.. I'm going to try ELF this time, next time I'll try something else.
If it were up to me, i'd run 0w-40 in all my vehicles.. seems to me you get the best of both worlds, excellent cold start-up protection and then great warm / hard-use protection, but that's not what the manual calls for =/ |

Motomaster is rebranded imperial oil (Esso). Good quality. |

sorry bout that split , didn't know just seemed kind of stupid to haggle over it.
Other oil to think about is Redline , i use it and love it, i just switched over from Motul, which is great as well.
Something to think about is making a good friend with a shop, i dont do my oil changes anymore cause its cheaper to have my mechanic do it, He charges me 8 dollars per quart from his Canisters compare to the 12 he charges me for buyin the bottles seperate... So he either has me do the oil change or when he has spare time he just drops the oil , works on something else , and just slowly does the oil change, sure it may take him an hour to do it but when its free , i dont mind droppin the car off and going to get food.
Either way back to topic, jump on a BMW forum and ask about , a lot of good information besides porn on the intraweb |

Redline is probably my preferred choice for oil, but unfortunately they don't make 5w-50, only 5w-40 which is not thick enough. The factory oil is supposed to be 10w-60, but that's way too thick for edmonton's winter, so i want to run 5w-50 winter, 10w-60 in summer. |

| AFI Performance |
An oil analyst on another message board I am on did a comparison of all aspects of an oils performance. Out of all the brands he tested Castrol Syntec made in Germany was the best oil by far. It was better than Redline, Mobil, and all the other top hitters in the oil business.
The key is to look on the back of the bottle for the Made in Germany marking at the bottom right of the rear label.
If it says made in New Jersey or any other location it is a completely different oil, probably the blended type someone mentioned earlier. |

castrol isn't a true synthetic (except the german stuff)
Mobil 1 makes some true synthetic and some non-true synthetic, depends on viscosity and type.
esso XD-3 is a true synthetic that's cheap and comes in a good variety of viscositys.
hope that helps a little. check out: http://bobistheoilguy.com/
and go to the forums. theres some good info on there if you look around. |

i did in my RX7 ... rumor from racing beat was it dyno results with WHP gains , like 5 or something ( dont quote ) Never had a chance to dyno the car.
Umm royal purple is supposedly good but expensive as well. I dont know oil prices for others because i stated above, i got on my mechanics christmas card list and i get stellar oil deals. But in the end , Oil you decide to run is critical and i was always one to spend more , because it will benefit you later. Same goes for Oil filters.
Best thing is just keep changing it, all cars ive had never gone more then 4000 kms without an oil change, my b-series honda is getting changes every 2500 , and the RX7 i had in the summer got 2 changes in just under 3200 kms , this being said i do drive my cars harder then most. |
