What class hitch. - Click HERE for Original Thread

Mobius
What class of hitch does a step bumper count as? Class I or II?

SilverNeonRacer
Depends on the vehicle.
Mini/mid sized truck normally a class 2, some full size trucks class 3

Vans, I dunno, check your manual it should say how much you can tow.

Mobius
I guess I could have given more details:

1995 Chevy S10 Club Cab
4.3 V6 2WD

The manual is about as helpful as cancer, and the internet seems to also completely lack information on this subject.

SilverNeonRacer
If I had to guess, class 2 tops, maybe a class 1.

I know not much help. I had a 2000 Dakota and the step bumper on that one was a class 2, with a 3.9L V6 and 4x4.

It all depends on what you want to tow. My guess if the ball is on the bumper only with no additional subframe assembly your tow rating sould be around 1000lbs.

I used to tow a sea do behind my 89 S15 (Same as S10 only it''s a GM) I had a bumper ball.

If you are toing more than that you will need upgrades to prevent brakedowns or safety reasons.

With an aftermarket tow hitch Class 1, i wouldn't tow much more than a small runabout boat. with your truck. Not equiped Brake wise or suspension for much more.

Hope this helps

SilverNeonRacer
stybscelica, unless I'm reading your post wrong, what he wants to tow has no factor on what his bumper hitch is rated for, now I do agree, depending on what he wants to tow should determine if he needs a proper frame mounted hitch.

Also bumper hitches can be prone to damage, the surface where the ball is mounted can start to twist either back or forward.

In the lines of a proper hitch, (this is what I like to do) is get either the biggest hitch available for your vehicle or one step above what you want to tow. it might add a few extra pounds, but your less likely to break your hitch.

Now I'm not saying, slap on a class 5 hitch and go and try to tow 8000+ lbs with it, but if you can get a class 5 why not.

On the S10, with that engine, and what I'm guessing for vehicle weight, I wouldn't tow more than what a class 2 is rated for, maybe even less 2000lbs. - With a proper frame hitch, maybe more if you can get a fifth wheel for it.

Looks like i was wrong, thinking of an older smaller version....
You can get class 3 proper hitch for that truck.

I'm looking to tow my car with a dolly, curb weight on the car is 2720lbs, dolly is 650lbs. I may have to look at other means to tow it. What are some decent places to get a hitch put on?

SilverNeonRacer
Based on that site I found.

With a bumper hitch.... no.

Class 3 hitch the hitch will do it.

I'm trying to find out what the truck is rated for..

Where to get a hitch installed - Hitch warehouse on 169st and 108 or 109ave. just east of the Mr Sub

SilverNeonRacer
Based off your truck, and an 02 Neon(I used it cause I know it weighs 2900lbs) U-haul will let you rent a dolly.

When I had my 4x4 diesel mini truck, they wouldn't let me use it to tow the neon.

Is your car fwd or rwd?

if you use the dolly on a rwd you need to disconnect the drive shaft, I think on a manual tranny you can get away without disconnecting it though.

They have a car hauler, but the hauler weighs about 2200 or 2400lbs. A true class 3 will handle up to 5000lbs I think.. what does the door sticker say on the truck?

Mobius
The door sticker wasnt helpful.

My car is an RX7 --> RWD Manual Tranny. Leaving it in neutral will work just fine in my case.

I can't find what the truck is rated for either, but the car hauler is definately out of the question.

I'll look to getting a class three hitch if the price is right. If not, I'll rent/borrow a truck with one.

SilverNeonRacer
If you rent a u-haul 1/2ton they should have a class 5 and you should be able to use the hauler.

I think the u-haul trucks a $20/day plus KM and gas. The dolly is $40ish, hauler, can't remember.

The hitch on my car I think was just over $200 installed. So if you are going to be doing this enough a hitch is worth it, if it's a one time deal or a two time deal, just rent the 1/2ton and dolly or hauler.

If your thinking of a U-haul dolly you gotta make sure you get one with the fenders intact... when I rented on they had the fenders zip tied on cause somebody broke them.. the zip ties didn't last to long

Godzilla
isn't your tongue weight stamped on the bumper, id go off of that.

For safety reasons, it is recommended NOT to exceed one third of your tow Vehicle GVW without assisted braking, I.e trailor brakes.

With assisted braking it is reccomended not to exceed two thirds your tow vehicle weight.

Simply put if your trailor out weights your tow vehicle you will never be able to stop safely.

Keep in mind these recommedations are for Passenger Designated vehicles and not Commercial vehicles designed for hauling.

Hopes this gives you some more info.

Thats interesting. I understand it.

Now I know U-haul isn't the best source, but To rent a tow dolly from them, and there's no brakes on the dolly, the Towing vehicle much weigh 700lbs more than the car being towed andthe dolly.(They let me tow a combo that was only 300lbs less than the factory spec curb wieght of my car, but actual curb wieght was closer to 600lbs more

I can't remember if their car hauler has surge brakes or not, but U-haul surge brakes suck at the best of times, I rented a normal enclosed trailer frm there recently, it weighed 1400lbs, I was only moving couches, so I maybe put 300lbs in it, and the surge brakes only seemed to work when I didn't want them too(trying to get out of a bumpy snowy icy driveway.)
