I had a 81 Ski-Doo Citation 4500 with 396.8cc motor, got rid of it and now I have a 97 Polaris Indy 700 RMK, wow what a difference.
I have to get pics of my actual sled, but this is the same year/model/color as mine:

Betcha its a total beast in the mountains. Probably not great in the flats though..
I have a piped 2001 AC ZL 500, they are pretty light and have 95hp stock. Not made for deep snow with the 121" track but it'll do 105mph on hardpack. |

heh, I just got mine, in my lil test run to day I had her up to 100km/h on hardish pack, but it has 1.5 or 1.75" paddles.
I'm told she'll hit triple digit on the mph side easy, I'll need a really big field to even attempt that, at 1/2-3/4 throttle it starts to cat walk, even on hardpack.
Oh yeah. mines twin piped too, forgot that. I need a new tail light lense and my speedo doesn't work, both hopefully minor.
Onthe non motorized sleds, anybody know where to get the king size GT snow racers? My neighbours kids would love to go that kind of sledding, and since we have some pretty big hills I could tow them up with the snowmobile :P |

I gotta get pictures of mine, it'll rock your socks off.
It's a....well......it's a 1962 Allouette 2 cylinder engine, but only 1 cylinder works, and it's mounted into a 1981 Artic Cat via bailing twine. The seat got eaten by a cow though, so it has a bunch of foam stuffed into a burlap sack that's duct-taped closed and attached to the sled with more bailer twine. The sparkplug is also broken, so the plug wire is held on by yet more duct-tape. The cab went missing when we went out riding one day, no idea where it went, so she's really free-air cooled now.
It's parked at my cousins where him and his buddies all have 700cc beasts. On the flats I get absolutely owned. They'll run flat out across the bay behind my cousins place for like...30 seconds than have to stop for 5 or minutes so I can catch up, but in the trails, that thing is second to none. She handles twists and turns like a dream, although it only works if you don't mind turning by just spinning the track with the skis hard over. The odd she hits ice and goes straight, in which case it takes 20 seconds to pull it back away from the tree you smash into, but that's the beauty of a peice of shit, you just don't care.
Whenever we need trails made, I go on my beast. She goes through 8' high cattails like it's fresh powder (wide open free air remember, so the cat tails don't plug up cooling and make it overheat), and if there's a steep slope a lot of times she's the only one that can get up without pushing, usually with enough juice at the top to still jump, as I found out at the quarry when she jumped from the incline no one could up, across the flat, and down the other side into the rocks with me still on her back. :S Wasn't pretty, but we came out alright.
She's a sweet sled. We keep finding bargains, like 400cc machines for $120 (my cousin live in rural Quebec where everything is dirt cheap 'cause they all claim native status and get free ones).
God I love that little machine. |

I was told to say away from the EFI Indy's.
thats a good price if it's in good shape. My 97 was $2500, but it's in really good shape, no seat tears or anything, just found out it holds alot of fuel,, the gauge said close to empty, so I went to fill itup.. 44L later.... sheesh the wife's car holds 47L, my old sled was about 25L |

here's a sled my buddy built last year. Its engine was a 49cc suzuki we put aditional supports under the seat, had the brake operated by a bike brake lever on the tip of one ski and the throttle is operated by an old gear shift lever on the other ski. the motor was mounted on a pivot so we could have the skis on the ground with little traction for the back wheel making it awsome for drifting, ir raise the skis for better traction in the snow with our hand studded tire which we used wood screws on. It ran pretty good until we ran out of oil, so we decided to use rootbeer and a 50/50 mix of gas and octane booster. When it was running good we could prob get it goin 30-40km/h

You may want to check your limter strap at the front of your suspension. They are known to tear or break on RMK's, or it could just be too loose and if they are you lose pressure on your skis.
Loose/broken limiter straps put torque on the rear of the track = easier to lift the skis, nightmare for hill climbing... Some guys loosen them a tad in the powder though to make it easier to steer.
Tighter limiter straps put more torque on the front of the track and makes it harder to lift the skis, but gives better cornering when your on the throttle and makes hill climbing easier.

Hmm interesting.... I know a guy with an old old sled, no limiter straps, if he hammers the throttle from a start she'll catwalk.
I'm waiting for a manual on this thing, where are the limiter straps? I have the IFS with trailing arms if that makes a diff.
Thanks |

Stick your head near the front of your rear susp. I've rode the exact same sled as yours before and what you said sounded wierd so I thought it was worth a mention.

| Ohh ok, so it's the front track suspension, not the from skis suspension.... ok, that makes sense. Sorry still new to sleds, my first was the citation and I only got about 10 hours on it before I spun a bearing or something. And I got about 20min on this one. |

Hehe my first sled was a 68' allouette with a 250 fan-cooled single iirc.. was a decent little sled for kids or beginners i guess, but the thing would max out at maybe 20mph and if I dared take her into anything deeper than a foot of powder it became super unstable and tipsy.. felt more like a boat on water than a snowmobile in deep snow. burned more oil than it did gas too
Then I moved up to a 95 Yamaha Vmax 600 with GYT pipes and some other goodies.. what a difference. But after one good season of ditch banging I needed to upgrade to something without telescopic front suspension, and more than 5 inches of travel in the rear. So I traded her in to a dealership in wainwright plus 900 bucks for a 97 Yamaha 700SX, with a piped 700 triple and 1.75 x 144" track, and again it was like night and day.
Of all the brands and engine configurations ive tried, I still love piped yamaha triples.. flame me if you will, as I know triples have gone the way of the dodo..
dtjohnst if your ever looking for a reliable, cheap, and quick little sled, look around for a late 70's or early 80's yamaha 340 enticer.. smooth ride, runs forever and they'll break 60mph on hardpack easy. |
|

I was told the problem with triples is the center carb tends to freeze up or something. like literally freeze.
I'm still a newb to the sport, so I'm in no place to dis a sled. |

Yeah, my cousin had a 340 while my Alouette was still mint. But I can't give up on the old bird now. Though I think I'll have to replace some of the internals next winter so there won't be much Alouette left in it. I'd really feel bad giving up on it before I manage to get that 2nd cylinder working. If I can get that working, I might think about moving on. |

| Wow that looks like quite the mountain rig. |

blahhh all this is making me want to buy another sled.. btw nestle nice rig, my neighbor has an 800 RMK thats almost identical. btw, out of curiosity what kind of secondary clutch are you running?
When my 240 broke down a year ago in edson, there was a guy with a turbocharged RX-1 mountain driving around near the uhaul we were at.. thing sounded mean as hell and prolly went like a coked out cheetah. |

| I ride a 670 summit 136. Fun sled for riding around here, gonna pick up a 800 REV next year. |

I knew my new sled was a little longer than my old sled, but I found out it's wider too... Hmm
My old one made it through my gate to my backyard with about 6" to spare on each side, this one I have about 1" on each side....
we have some pretty tight trails around here where I barely squeezed through with my old sled, shoot even took out a couple trees, so this could be interesting.... |

Sorry to hijack this thread....... but it looks like some of you know your shit when it comes to these things..........SOOOO
QUESTION!
Q: I am looking for two sleds. They are primarily going to be used at the lake. (trails, on the lake itself, a little off trail). No vision of going to the mountains in the near future.
I have narrowed down that I need something with the following specs. I am willing to spend upto 5K for each. These will see minimal use when I go to the cabin. 10-15 days throughout the winter.
I figure I need:
600 (the only thing that may pull my fat ass)
136 track max (unless someone can convince me that I need more?)
1.25" Minimum (I really do not want to get stuck if we get a dump of 2 feet of snow)?
Hand warmers (...I want to be comfortable)
Anything else I should be looking for?
What make/models would fit the bill. Trying to find one in the autotrader is like buying mattresses. They all look the friggen same?
Thanks |

well i have always been a fan of ski-doo and have always had one my last sled was a 583 mxz with a 121 track and that thing still got up to 180k per hour across the lake and im not a little guy either
the mxz is basically a trail sled and the one im looking at today is the mxz renagade which has the 136 track so if i do come across some powder it will get by
it also comes down to what you wanna spend |
