I want to start going waterfoul hunting with my buds this summer and have looked everywhere trying to find where to get my hunting license..
Apparently I need to attend a Hunting Course or take a Hunter-competency test.. Everywhere tells me what I need to do but not how or where to do it! Someone please help ahha!
Also, what are some cheap rifles you could mabe recommend? I know air rifles are somehwhat suitable (even the .177) However, I'm not sure how suitable they are for ducks etc!
Thx |

Just tell them you took one. ;)
If you took a course in Juniour high, like wildlife and it was covered in their, that counts also.
I never went specifically for ducks, but when I hunt geese, I just use a 12 gauge shot gun. Works good, when a flock of them fly over your head. |

Call up any range and ask, they'll either offer the course, the test or know where you could do either or. Wild West at West Ed, the Edmonton Gun Club and Phoenix Range are some places to try.
As for hunting ducks...unless you're a crack shot, that's a small, fast moving target. Factor in wind and lead factor, and hitting a single bird with even a shotgun can be a feat. With a flock, shotgun's are a good bet, and while you could probably drop a bird with a rifle by aiming at the general vicinity of a flock, I'm pretty sure everyone would know it was a fluke unless you proved it with a flight of one lone bird.
Either way, I'd recommend you check out Milarm on the North Side, near China Town. Good selection of new and used firearms, gear and books. In fact, you might even be able to take the test/course there. I thought the prices were pretty reasonable but I have nothing else to compare them to in Alberta.
Something to consider when you're looking to is the price of rounds. As an example the military was offered a discount rate if they bought pistols in .357 SIG but opted for .40 S&W instead since ammo is half as much. Shotgun ammo is relatively inexpensive. If you find a good deal on a rifle, make sure you compare the price of ammo. There may be a reason they're willing to let the weapon go for cheap and knowing they'll make a fortune off your ammo is as good a reason as any. Shotguns are pretty cheap to buy ammo for as long as it's not some weird length (very few shotguns use exotic ammo though), and most rifles you'll find recommended are probably a .22 or a .308 (.308 would be overkill for a duck though...it's cleave it in two).
In general, hunting duck means small rounds, so avoid anything big and powerful. .12 gauge is fine, .10 gauge or bigger is WAY too much. .20 gauge is even fine for duck but you'll find a wider variety in .12 plus more options for ammo.
For rifles I really don't think you'd need anything more than a .22. Which is good since there are a ton of .22 rifles out there and ammo is pretty cheap. I will caution, however, that you avoid anything that's only one type of .22. Most decent rifles will handle both the .22 Remmington and a .22 LR for example, which allows you to buy whichever of those is on sale and save some bucks. Limiting yourself to one type can be a hassle since I've been to placed that only had 1 type before. |

Heheh. I was going to mention that.
He will be out their all day without a single duck!
I have tried it many times for fun when I went hunting. And its pretty much impossible, unless like stated, you are a crazy shot.
I was also told Wild West at West ED is a good place to go. |

hahaha. I want to get a .22 rifle to hunt those mothers. My buds and I used our boats last summer with electric motors to sneak up on em.
Also, anyone recommend some good cheaper .22 rifles? Thx! |

Sure...a used one. Tons of used .22's floating around. Check the same places I mentioned above: Wild West, Phoenix, Milarm. Someone will have something reasonable. |
