I just got a new puppy and am looking into geting some insurance for her. Does anyone have any recomendations of where to go or things to look for when geting some.

Thanks.

The said on the local news (Gobal, CFRN?) this was a scam just like car insurance. :D

They suggested you setup a savings account for your pet and deposit a few bucks a month.

I did exactly that, I openned an ING savings account for my dog and automatically deposit $20 every month. 3.5% interest right now.

I haven't had any problem with my car insurance company. I had 4 break ins in 1 year and they covered all damages and didn't raise it at all.

Any one else got some good names of pet insurance companies???

Fire'N'Ice
PetCare
PetPlan <~is who the Humane Society recommends

I love Google!

The big thing is that they normally have a low max payout, and do not cover the things you may be most worried about.

I second self-insuring, and this is a guy whose family spend in excess of 10 grand on our last dog.

I have a bulldog and they are prone to hip displacement and other hip problems. We were going to buy insurance incase he needs surgery or something and found out that they don't cover stuff like that. There is a lot of fine print just like all insurance companies. Remember that insurance companies are getting rich by not paying out claims. Just my $0.02.

Oh btw I didn't buy the insurance. IF something happens I will just pay out of pocket.

My gf's sister had a bulldog as well and he had tons of problems to. They also looking into insurance and the insurances companies arent stupid. They are in it to make money. So as stated read the fine print, I know some of the policies are dog specific and they will not cover known problems on certain breeds.

Just a coles notes version for everyone:

Don't bother buying the insurance. It won't be there when you need it.

The only good thing about the pet insurance is places like Boardwalk will let you rent from them if you have pets and pet insurance.

my sister has it for her two dogs and it has come in extremely handy for her, not sure exactly which company she goes through for it can check later today and get back to you on it.

Ya that would be great and could you give me like an example of when she used it if you don't mind.

the_fornicator
they suggest getting it for the first year or two of the pet's life as that's when you'll incur the most vet expenses.

I am going to go a bit more indepth here. We had a dog, she died after many thoudands of vet bills. We got a new dog, said this time we will get insurance...looked into it, and found that most have a low cap, and again, do not cover the things you are likely most concerned about. And if they do, they will only pay, say, up to $1000.

I wish I could provide names of companies, but I do not recall. After looking at some, we realized most are the same, and really not worth it. Likewise car insurance would not likley be worth it if you were not concerned about getting sued for millions. They will not cover the "huge" hit, but more like hundreds or very small thousands.

what kind of dog do u have or is getting.

My sister paid $600 for a Yorkshire Terrier & than it had some health problem & she than had to pay $5000 to have it fix...

I love Dogs, but for $5000 I would of Kill it. (It a F'N rat dog anyway)

On a side note... I paying over $2000 +++ for a dog. I sure hope that I don't have any big problems ( But I'm getting a cool dog) not a Rat...

I have a maltese poodle and lately her father has been having some health issues so that is why I am looking into insurance.

Little bit off topic, but a good breeder will have some sort of warranty too.
