Turbo from a smart car. - Click HERE for Original Thread

kornymunkies
Now I had never actually taken a close look but today at work I noticed how small the turbo actually was from a smart car.

newaccorddriver
wow, you can practically finger that turbo:cool:

anyone know how it compares to a firefly turbo?

Invalid Zero
Smart car? More like not-so-Smart car.

Dur....:smack:

crazyrx7
The wastegate actuator is bigger than the turbo. BTW which Mercedes dealership do you work at?

R.K.

JeepGirl
WOW!!!!

that is a tiny little thing isnt it? i think it would almost be big enough for my 1.3L civic engine... i wonder what it spools at.... 1100rpm or so?

SilverZ24
The engine is only .8 litres so I guess it doesn't need much.

Fazda
lol that is rediclous.. that must have next to nothing for lag.. lol..i dont think i've ever seen a turbo that small in mylife.. who ever says size matters lol :dunno:

RacerGirl
awww, it's so little!

Tech2
Not little! Cute.

ChromeDragon
Not really that surprising. Don't they turbo little scooter engines over in Japan?

thats so true u can get any car with or with out a turbo

sparkycivic
800cc's... 4000rpm... not much airflow required
1300cc's... 8000rpm... 3.25 times as much airflow required.

that little turbo would be out of breath by 2800rpm on the civic, and probably making boost at idle ;) i'd pay to see that in person!

but on the plus side there would be NO turbo lag....

It would actually only be 3 little headers.

i was thinking about quad turbos on a 4 cylinder engine. i doubt the smart cars engine car spool 3 of them that easily

I'd just go twin turbo like this.

That's what I meant too.

Nancy
Really interesting to notice !!!

ChromeDragon
The open-wheel competition car that the U of A engineers built that was at the motor show was fitted with the same trim Garrett turbo. Man is that thing tiny! It was powering a 600cc bike engine.

but imagine how that smartcar would light up once all the turbo's spooled:lol:

what traction?:dunno:

my guess is that you would build boost, dump the clutch and then promptly spin around in circles like a circus clown car:lol:

no doubt!

i raced one in the parking lot behind nait *private property*(one of the instructors there owns a smart)... with my 1.3L civic and i whooped that smart LOL funny thing is... his mileage only barely beat mine, and i had more cargo area and the smart weighed slightly more.

mind you... i've seen the video's on youtube of the gsxr or turbo hyabusa smart cars and i cant say i wouldnt own one of those... they look like fun!! chain drive though :dunno:

or the Brabus Mercedes V6 Bi-turbo smart roadsters... Yum!
