Ill pull this guy up from two years ago when Dave made a very accurate prediction:
http://forums.780tuners.com/showthr...ighlight=murder
In 2005, the city set its all-time one-year murder record with 39 deaths, more than one every 10 days.
In 2006, Edmonton recorded 36 murders – the second-worst year on record.
Right now we have 6 homicides in 52 days. Thats just under one every 9 days. aprox. 42 for the year....Looks like we are keeping pace with the trend of the last couple years.
I bring this up because the latest homicide took place in my apartment building right around the corner from me:
http://lastlinkontheleft.com/e2000.html#highrise
The story and reports are very sketchy because it only happened 24hours ago but from what I have heard and seen, it wasnt pretty. CTV Edmonton reported the victim was a male and may have been in the process of being dismembered. Also, with homicides, not many details are given out due to the fact that a case must be made and evidence must be kept on the DL till court time.
You get kind of a chilling feeling seeing cops in those csi type white ponchos walking around with black garbage bags full of who knows what as you go to do your laundry or take your trash out. Its hard not to think alittle bit more about how crazy things are getting when cops are asking you which floor the parkade is on so they can load up their vans with the evidence.
This is after I saw some serious beatings on the weekend at a club in west ed. Blood in fresh snow always looks eri but when your there and you dont know if the guy is going to live, it brings the whole meaning of life to a whole new level. |

| And things aren't going to get better until attitudes as a whole change. |

It's terrible. The one positive thing about these murders, is most of the victims are known to the accused. They aren't just totally random, for the most part. There have been a few stabbings that are just random people fighting though.
Basically if you don't get pissed up and get in fights on Whyte Ave at 3 a.m., aren't in the drug trade, aren't a prostitute and have fairly sane family and friends, the chances of you ending up on the evening news are pretty slim. |

I totally agree. I feel no less safe in the city than I did 5 years ago.
For the most part the people getting killed are living a lifestyle that is almost asking for it. While few of them probably deserve it, I find it hard to feel sorry for most of them. |

| that's pretty brutal, but i dont feel unsafe either. it's not like all the victims are random unassociated people. |

Edmonton is getting worse, I know one guy who got murdered last year.
Another kid I went to school with last year moved to Peace River for work and was murdered a couple weeks ago by his room mate.
And another guy I know either killed himself, or foul play was a factor, and died at the end of January this year.
And SilverZ24, and Dave, just like you stated, it all depends on who you hang out with, and the activities you are involved in.
But this just blows my mind! |

That's a nationwide trend. In Canada about 1/3 of murders are commited by family members. For comparison, only 1/8 is gang related and 1/5 is drug related.
Random isn't normal. And most of the stabbings that happen at clubs are usually traced back to someone beaking off. I'm not saying if you beak off you deserve to die, I'm just saying even if you are tough and have every intention to follow through on punching the guys face in like you said, he might be tougher and shank you. If people would keep their mouths shut and quit trying to prove how tough they are, this shit wouldn't happen. I don't even think there's more fights now than there was before at clubs, just there's more people ready to knife you for it.
I've met at least a dozen people who actually wanted to stab someone and go to jail, though they didn't want to kill them, because they were under some belief it would help make them big time rap and hip hop artists. Fucking tools. |

it also doesn't help with the huge boom we have going on right now. Lots of people earning good money so more people move here. Same for the drug dealers the see a huge market here so they move and it all creates a vicious circle.
My brother was one in 05 he was killed by a drunk drug dealer who was driving around and to make matter worse the drug dealer left the scene before anyone could get there to arrest him. |

| How many of these murders are related to alcohol? That is a subject due for some serious consideration, but instead we get more street racing laws. :dunno: |

let's not forget that ONE of the murders this year was a 3 year little boy. Removed from his birth home and placed into foster care, where apparently he was better off...
I do recall the exact same scenario last year too... |

I've known 2 people who got killed in the last couple years in edmonton aswell...
My old lady's friend got stabbed on the hood of a car.
A friend of ours' brother got shot in the head.
Lovely how this city is.
But I can say that both the people I knew were involved in gangs, or heavy coke dealing circles.
I feel bad for both of them, but.

STA FTWX2 :D
I know there are a bunch of crybabys who live here because I keep getting noise complaints. Maybe this will be the final straw for them. I had a guy ask me not to drive so fast in the underground parking lot because he lives right above and my exhaust is to loud...I just smiled and asked him what he thought of all the emergency vehicles that drive by 24hours a day with their sirens blarring :asshole: Think its funny that he couldnt stand the 5 seconds of mid range rpms twice a day from me, but he lives 50 feet from one of the busiest streets in Edmonton.
.....on a side note. If anyone is looking for a place to rent, I know of atleast 1 apartment that will be up for rent in the future (bad joke, but funny).....PM me so I can be your referer and save $75 :D |
