| How the hell do I get rid of these damn pop-ups? |
|
|
| midnite |
control panel -> admin tools -> services
find the service named messenger, change it's startup type to disabled, and hit stop to shut it down. |

I don't have "Admin Tools". I am on XP, not on a network.
Could it be somewhere else? |

thats where it is on my XP.
may have to change your control panel to 'classic view' |

if you have random popups happening it won't be from messenger service...its got to be 3rd party crap...
Go to Start -> Run
type: regedit
press OK
now you will want to search for the Key: Run
when you find the Run key it will show every non essencial (to windows) program that is loaded during start-up.
Careful what you remove from here though because they might pertain to your video card, sound card, or virus scanner as well..
Things to keep an eye open for are Gator Corporation, SaveNow, or Microsoft Office Companion (another Gator Corporation ploy).
Hope that helps. |

| If its 3rd party software go to downloads.com, get Ad-Aware. Install and and check for updates then run it. It will scan your registry and hard drive for all known 3rd party spyware and ad programs then remove them. Easiest way to do it. |
