Are there Circut Breaker Testers? - Click HERE for Original Thread

GOT BOOST
Hi Everyone,

After ripping apart my ceiling and tracing back my wires for my electrical sockets that stopped working I have come to the conclusion that one of my circuit breakers may be broken. Everything that is connected to that line does not work.

The wires are all connected at the connections, the junctions are all intact, the breaker however is not tripped.

The connections at the breaker are intact also.

When it is daylight tomorrow I will go and redo all the connections to see if maybe something slipped out in one of the pig tail connectors.

I lost power to the plugs just a fraction after turning on my TV.

Is there a such thing as a circuit breaker tester to see if it is faulty or defective? Or should I just go and purchase a new breaker?

Any ideas are appreciated as I am suffering from GOW withdrawal on my 360 in surround sound. :tear:

Don't use a cheap multimeter either. You can blow it right out of your hands. Whats the breaker for exactly? I can come check it out for you if you want.

Just a thought. but a way to test the breaker might be to just switch the wires coming off the breakers.

Dissconnect the wire from a known working breaker and install the wire from the circuit that is not working.

That said. I wouldn't reccomend a novice do that. Don't start disconnecting wires and then get stumped. An Electrician will charge you twice as much for the time he has to spend figuring out what you did.

For what it's worth, I have never heard of a "cheap" multimeter blowing out of someones hands.

EDIT: If you do decide to do anymore playing with breakers that might be faulty, while switching the breaker, ALWAYS use your less predominant hand (EG: the opposite hand you write with) and look away.

Edit, Edit: Did you happen to try fully resetting the breaker in question. Sometimes they trip but look like they are in still in the on position. To ensure that it is truly reset push the breaker completly to the off position, wait a second, then move it back to the on position.

Just buy any volt meter and test it, put one lead on the breaker and the other to ground see if theres any juice on the breaker. If not you need a new breaker

If you insist on buying something, buy a voltmeter with at least 120v scale. Not ANY meter will work.

You don't realize that his panel could have not just 120v. It could have 208 and higher. People like you are what make some trades people look stupid. You put 208 to a 120v break and you can kiss your ass goodbye. And any 120V meter will not do. First off it needs to be have an AC/DC option on it. You try and read it with DC(used on cars) voltage selected and you wont read anything.

Like i said earlier Mike, i am willing to come check it out for you.

Yup.

You?

HVAC/Refrigeration mechanic. So my trade is pretty much, plumbing, eletrical, heat, air conditioning and a bunch of other crap all in one. I work with 3 phase 600volts daily.

The only thing I should correct you on is that a house is fed with 120/240 (allow for obvious voltage variances) 120 is the line to Identified conductor voltage. 240 is Line to Line Voltage.

Ignore the crude drawing. It simply illustrates how a house can get 120v or 240v

yah my bad. I only deal with commercial buildings. I can't stand doing residential work. haha

MOP_zero
95% of the work I do is commercial.

347/600 is the majority of the stuff I am working on right now as well.

To the Original Poster: I am really interested to find out what the soloution was. Keep me updated.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the advice. I solved the issue. It turns out that in one of the junction boxes a the live wire slipped out of the pigtail connector thus breaking the circuit. I tested the breaker with a volt meter. I forgot I was given one by my Opa last summer. For those that are interested it is a Truvohm be eico Model 20A3. 20,000 OHMS/VOLT D.C 10,000 OHMS A.C He used to be a power engineer many years ago before he retired. I am not sure if this is a good one or not, but it did the trick. The breaker passed of course.

Now I just need to fix my ceiling. I think I will go with a suspended ceiling.

Mop Zero,

Thanks for posting the diagrams!

Wookey, thanks for the offer to come out an help.

Here is a pic of my basement now. You see three of the seven in ceiling speaker wires hanging down. :tear:

Time to buy suspended ceiling supplies. :D

When you said you ripped stuff apart, I didn't really take you very seriously.

Wow. You really ripped your house apart.

I just noticed what could have been a concealed Junction box. I guess there is a reason it's against code to cover them.
