| I dont blame Lowe for this. If they couldnt get him resigned under the cap, than you HAVE to deal him or risk getting nothing. I think that he should have been signed by the begining of the year but Im not inside the office, I dont know why he wasnt signed, but being they couldnt get it done, I would have delt him to. Its just been confirmed as well, trade call is being completed as we speak. First rounder, Robert Neilson and some other guy that was drafted first round. Not to good of a deal in my opinion. I think they could have gotten more for him. |

| Sounds like Smyth wanted 5.5 and the oilers were willing to do 5 million. It seems petty that they let the Face of the Frachise go because off 500g. |

Do you blame them? Smyth is the face of the franchise and you know what I think he's worth 4.5 to 5 million but not a salary of 5.5 million a year. Smyth will not be an Yzerman in his career don't get me wrong he's a great player but I don't blame the organization at all on this trade might as well get something back in return for smyth.
Hey this is a team that traded Mark Messier, Wayne Gretzky and Jari Kurri.

I agree with you completely, but players know this as well notice how majority of players have a "GREAT" year on their last years its for contract leverage. I don't know about the trade still unproven players I'm not sure but the oilers are looking for the future with these moves. They got an unbeliveable amount of draft picks. |
|
|
| Ravendarat |
| I dont blame them for trading him today. I do think that if there was only 500,000 seperating them at the begining of the year, which it sounds like there was, and they had the availible funds, which they did, that it would have been smart to sign him. Is he worth it, probally not. As you said 4.5-5 is probally reasonable, however there is something to be said for investing in someone who is the leader and face of your team (ugly face but face none the less). I think it would have been wise to sign him if for no other reason than to keep public image positive. |

Might, but....
I am sure other teams will offer him more. I believe it was in the oilers best interest to sign him b4 he became a free agent. Whats to say that St. Louis or another team like that wont go offer him more than the 5.5 he wanted from us to be the benchmark of their younger team. |

| It's a huge slap in the face of Ryan Smyth, why the hell would you want to come back here after that. Lowe is a retard, not so much for getting rid of Smyth, but for what he got in return. Many GM's didn't even know Smyth was up for grabs, if they did the Oil could have come away with a hell of a better deal |

Honestly everyone that said this is smoking up something. Don't you guys remember in the fall the interview Smyth had on Sportsnet? He clearly stated he hoped to have the deal done before the start of the season. And Smyth clearly stated he's not a "push over" and quoted saying "look at doug weight won a stanley cup, Bill Guerin won a stanley cup"
Based on that it was known that if he didn't sign log term he wants to be traded or can move on with another team to win the cup. So lets get over it.. when it comes to these types of scenerios it seems to be a player's pride over anything else.

Please,
Any GM with half a brain knows everybody is available, pick up a phone and find out. Spreading the word when everybody knows the guy is a UFA in a couple months makes you look desperate.
I bet he doesn't pull more than the $5 million he refused from the Oilers in the offseason. He's got heart and he takes a beating, but that isn't worth $5 million in my books. Remember, this is the salary cap NHL. |

I don't remember this the interview, but rent a players do go back to the team they were just traded from (ie: Recchi and Weight last year), this is a good deal for Smyth, who gets a shot at the cup (although the isles making it into the playoffs is far from assured), the oilers get 2 former first rounders and another coming up. Besides, we all know Smyth loves playing here, his family is here, he's cheered for the oil since he was a kid and he's an Alberta boy, we have as good a chance as any team to sign him. |

Start praying that the Islanders go in the shitter after this trade, because the worse they finish, the better the draft pick position the Oilers get.
Bottom line is that this had to be done. Smyth knew what the alternatives were if he didn't sign before the deadline and he didn't come to terms with what the Oilers felt he was worth. Yes he busts his ass out there, yes he's a good player, but he is not a superstar by any means.
As some people have said, maybe Smyth will come back in the off season. He knows that hockey is a business ... well I hope he's at least smart enough to realize that anyways, and we all know he loves this city.
Anyone else feel like ordering a cable/satellite package that will give more Pens games? With big George giving Crosby, Staal and Malkin some breathing room they are going to be more exciting to watch than the rest of the Eastern Conference combined. |

Ok witht hat comment do you think tanguay is worth 5.2 million a year? Flames over paid for him and Smyth is having a good year so he can command that much if the Oilers signed long term and Smyth had an off season next year at say 10 to 15 goals would you still think its worth it?
KLowe is a smart guy I'll bet you the oilers organization know how this feels for the fans and sign a few free agents this summer. There is a huge UFA list of players available this summer I'm crossing my fingers for Datsyuk lol not going to happen but you never know. |

Since it looks like the Oilers are pretty much done after shitting the bed again tonight I think they should start giving the prospects and up and coming players more time. Pouliot should be up on the first line at centre, not Lupul. While it would be great to see these players come in and win, the lower the Oil drop, the higher they pick at the draft.
Who knows? They might finally make some good decisions on draft day. |

A lot of misinformation and just basic dumb views in this thread...
I love Smyth as much as the next guy, and he is one of my favorite players in the league, but if he wanted 5.5 I am glad Lowe got rid of him.
Lowe is already snakebit from overpaying players overproducing on a signing season like he did last year (Horcoff, Roly, Pisani, Mactavish)
I have thought lowe has made some very bad decisions in the last year (not including last deadline and the Hemsky signing which was a great signing) and the biggest blunder I think of this whole deadline thing is not trading that leech Sykora for anything. What this tells me is Sykora will be resigned next year. He is overrated, and I have not seen a player leech off another as much as he leech points off Hemsky in a long time.
What Lowe should have done, is gotten Biron somehow, and dropped both Roly and Smyth and then try to make a deal for Briere next season.
This team is in huge trouble next year.. Lupul should have maybe been let go as well, next season is his last chance to prove he is not over-rated and just mentally not tough enough to be relied on for as much as he has.
Smyth will no resign here next year. After the mid season contracts given out while his was drawn out all season untill the deadline then traded to a team I am assuming he does not want to even play off, is a huge slap in the face.
Unless there is a shakeup in the Coaching or GM department for next year, we are rebuilding. |

I don't understand why people feel that UFA's will solve everything. The Oilers will be bidding against everyone else in the league for Drury, Gomez, Smyth, etc... What makes you think they'll want to play in Edmonton? |

What makes you think that they won't want to play in Edmonton? We're in the same level playing field as any other team it all comes down to player preferances. I don't think Free Agency will solve anything but I'm looking at it from a management point of view that they might try and bandage the Pronger and Smyth fiasco by signing some high profile free agents in the summer.

I agree with everything you said except for the Sykora comment. Hemsky passed 80% of the time so it would make sense that Sykora is the trigger man and gets points off him. He's struggled just as much as every other oiler this season that includes Lupul, Hemsky, Torres, Pisani, Horcoff heck even Stoll compared to last year. Hemsky always looks for Sykora and vice versa so it a wash I think. He's not a defensive liability or he wouldn't have lasted in New Jersey as long as he did and look at his point totals previously in Anaheim and in New Jersey can you say its the system or the whole team in general? |

I can't believe whether Smyth is a good hockey player is even being debated. He's great at leading, competing, taking shit in front of the net, scoring, assisting ... he's the whole package, mullet or not. You're a complete idiot if you even consider otherwise. (A complete idiot who can't even spell idiot ;) ) He's not the greatest at finesse, but he gets the dirty job done.
He didn't leave for the money - he probably left so he could be on a winning team. The oilers suck. Our defense is the shits, as we lost our 2 puck movers at the beginning, and our offense is all injured. We have a guy that could be a genius player if he realized how good he is (Hemmer) and not much else right now.
Really, do you think Ryan gave a shit about 1 more million ... as much as being stuck for 12 years on a team that has the best fans in the world, and not much else?
Our fans will continue to be the best. We had our Cinderella run last year and everyone knew it wasn't going to last. When you have 16 years of not being in the finals, and you still sell out your coliseum, it doesn't really matter who's playing for the team. |

First of all he didn't leave he got traded because they couldn't come to an agreement on the contract before the deadline. Is it financials or is the lenght of the contract we don't know that. But based on his previous interview which I'm refering to on sportsnet in the fall and what was constantly played on 630ched when smyth got traded it seems to be financial. Bob mackenzie on TSN reported there was about 200k - 300k difference. In all honesty we will never know but signs lead to difference in opinion.
As for the defence it was questionable form the start but only way we could have gotten around with it was that the offence would be there. As for the offence being injured Stoll, Pisani and Lupul (for the bit) were injured well after the all star break. We had a pretty Healthy team Minus Moreau who is NOT an offensive player. The team underachieved especially the forwards. |

Many players that aren't true fans of the game (Which is quite a few stars in all honesty) may not like edmonton because:
- Intense pressure to succeed because of fans
- Not able to blend into the city
- Weather
- Travel (As opposed to playing for an eastern team)
Edmonton still has a budget to work within (Which is typically lower than the cap), and Lowe seems too smart to overpay for a player, while there are many teams that are more than willing. |

If you read tsn he was offered 4 years at 5.5 million per year he declined it wanting to seek 5.7 million per year. So in short he stood to his point and the management stood on theirs as well. I would side with management on this personally. Yea its a 200k difference but if a player is willing to commit to playing for a team then being the highest paid player on the team at a considerable amount should be suffeciant. But it was management's fault not to give a proper indication to smyth that he would be traded otherwise. Seems like Smyth and his agent didn't think it was an "actual" deadline.

TrevorK,
I completely agree with you but money does talk unfortunately we're not free flowing as some other teams in the league and its a good thing that teams like Anaheim, Pheonix, LA and Florida can only stack a 24 player roster or every player would want to be there. |

No GM in their right mind is going to trade a bankable player like the ones you listed for a guy who is only as dependable as the Stanley Cup run you are aquiring him for because Smyth is an UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENT after this season.

Pronger fucked himself, half the women in Edmonton, and all of the Oilers fans in one short stint here.
He is one of the top 3 defencemen in the league, no doubt, but like I mentioned earlier about the Smyth trade in another post, every GM in the league knew the situation the Oilers were in.
He HAD to be moved (due to personal family issues in Pronger's case, not so with Smitty), as such, nobody was willing to give full market value because they didn't have to. Hockey is a business, put all the emotions aside. |

He can tip a puck and take an asskicking for the chance to tip that puck, no doubt. I am not questioning his heart or love of the game. However, $5+ million can aquire much more than the sum of Smyth's stats. |

Sounds more like his agent was trying to get the highest deal he could. I dunno. oh well I'm not really a hockey guy its just sad to see them getting rid of the guy that was actually having a great season for a bag of pucks.
You call 3 first round picks a bag of pucks?
In the new salary cap NHL, scouting and DEVELOPMENT is key.
You know who is going to be really dangerous in the next 3 years? Pittsburgh. All they need is goaltending.
Once/if we develop Devin Dubnyk the Oilers will be a force to be reconed with again if our offence reclaims their former glory. Toronto will be in good shape too finally if they don't screw up the development of Justin Pogey.
By the way, where are all the Rollison nut swingers from last year that were hailing him as the saviour? His true colors showed this year once you took away one of the best defencemen in the league. |

Ryan Smyth is awesome.. great amount of effort every night, every shift...
be all end all of all this is the fact that if smytty wanted to still be here.. he would be.. i know he wanted what he felt he was worth .. but c'mon now 5.75 vs 5.5.. Maybe his agent fucked him |

| Other than the fact he's good at what he does, and plays with heart, I'm glad he's gone. In my opinion he shouldn't be the face of a franchise. We need to focus on building around a young star, who can make players around him better. The likes of Crosby, Ovechkin, Lecavalier,... I'm hoping this is the first of many salary dumps so we can have a real shot in a few years, rather than signing a few hopefuls every year and scraping by all the time. 9th place is annoying, and it seems to be a good fit for the Oilers. Let them go down in a blaze of glory this year. |

Samething with Pronger. who did we get for him??? that's right nobody.
I guess it is frustrating seeing the Oiler's being so close to stanley only to see them the following year being such a shitty team.
You don't seem to realize that the Islanders gave the Oilers two top prospects and a first round draft pick to have Smyth for the rest of this season AND THAT'S IT! They have no guarantee that he will sign with them. For all we know he could re-sign with the Oilers come July 1st and then people will be getting in line to suck Kevin Lowe's dick for the great move he made.
This season was a write off and Lowe realized it. Nine points out, there wasn't much chance of getting in and even if they did it would be like every other year that the Oilers scraped in without a superstar D man and a hot goalie. Out in the first, possibly second round.
Lowe is thinking about the future of the franchise, not clinging to the past of one failed cup run. I love Smytty as much as the rest of you, but bottom line is that he wanted too much money for what the Oilers can afford and what a player of his calibre is worth in the new NHL. It was a tough decision, I'm sure, but Lowe did what had to be done and I think the Oilers will be a better team in coming years for it. |

FUCK, nice.
I say to anyone at a game wearing the 35, "nice Roli jersey, you fucking bandwagon fan!!!"
Roli is consistently 50/50. If you look at his wins & losses, they're the same number. Half the time he wants to play like a genius, and half the time he's a fucking sieve. When the only guy who got rid of the rebounds Roli LOVES to give away was traded (44), suddely Roli wasn't looking so hot anymore, eh?
I'm pissed that Jusi isn't played more. It's also annoying how people refuse to see that Roli is just "OK" in goal, even now.
So thanks, Blaine.
That being said, I gave away my Minnesota tix for tonight, cuz I can't bear to see a display like Tuesday's ever again. |

| roli is ok at best i can agree with that.. he made some big saves in the playoffs but always lets in the weak ones.. he would make a very strong back up goalie.. thats about it. definetly not a number one! |

You do realise you are a complete moron with you comment right? Here is Roloson's stats currently he's got a save percentage as Dominic Hasek who has been playing less games than him.
18 DWAYNE ROLOSON EDM 56 1603 145 2.67 25 25 5 1458 .
He is above Kari Loethenen of the Athlanata trashers has a better goalie stats then him and Atlanta is in 6th place and IN the playoffs. He stands currently in 18th place among goalies in the NHL stat department and guess who's number 17th? Ryan Miller from buffalo... so in your logic you would think Ryan Miller sucks ass right? Get a life man this team under achieved not just the one player everyone one in the lineup did. Where were you last year when Roloson back stopped against Detroit San Jose and Anaheim? He's not an All star Goalie or is He Roberto Luongo.. but he is better than what we had in Ty Conklin.
He's been incosistant as with the WHOLE team. To lay blame on one person as if he's the problem is pretty stupid when the the team as a WHOLE is struggling with incosistancy. If he was on any other team right now he would ha ve a better record and PLEASE take a look at where Cam Ward of the Stanley cup champions sits in the standing...

No one is laying blame on just Roloson, they just made passing mention of how all those bandwagon jumpers who thought he was the best thing invented since the Shooter Tutor have since departed said wagon. Don't get your panties up in a bunch.
Buffalo isn't doing good because of Miller, he's an average goalie. They are doing well because they have one of, if not the strongest all-around team in the league on the defensive and offensive sides of the ice. Pretty much every player on that team plays two-way hockey, compared to Edmonton who have a bunch of players who barely play one-way hockey.
They had a good run last year, but that was a completely different team. Like it or not, Pronger was that Oilers team. He was the glue that held the offence and defence together right through that playoff run. When he left, the team fell apart. |

100% what Chromey just said.
Pronger is the reason we made the playoffs, I've been saying it all year long.
Roli's 50/50, unless you're completely blind. (25 wins, 25 losses this season.) He's a leader and the team loves him, and he stops the play when the team needs a break ... there's a lot more to being goalie than stopping pucks. He's a great goalie but only stops 50% of the pucks. Pronger had more blocked shots than Roli had saves. Our defense is the shits, so naturally, whether or not Roli can stop any shot became apparent.
Let's all forget about his triple-overtime with Detroit because we had Pronger then. |

It's not that the Oilers d-men are terrible, but Pronger made everyone on the ice better ... well on his team. He can control the pace of the game like only a few other players in this league can do. Go watch some clips from last year and notice how the forwards hardly ever pressured Pronger. This was because they knew nine times out of 10 he would burn them and move the puck past.
Or better yet, go watch Ray Borque in his prime. Even the best forechecking teams in the league just sat back and waited for him to make the first move. It isn't about flashy play with them, just about setting up plays, getting the puck in the other team's net and keeping it out of their own. Nothing fancy, just really smart, positional hockey.
Why do you think Pronger can play 28 minutes a night? He's always in position. As a big bonus he can move the puck and score as well. I'm honestly not sure why players don't spend more time on good positional play and foresight. Maybe it is just a natural instinct for the game? |
