Al Gore's Mansion Described As Energy Hog

(CNSNews.com) - Former Vice President (and global warming aficionado) Al Gore deserves an award for hypocrisy, says the Tennessee Center for Policy Research.

The group, which studied Gore's electric and natural gas consumption, says his mansion in Belle Meade area of Nashville "consumes more electricity every month than the average American household uses in an entire year."

In his documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, Gore urges Americans to conserve energy by reducing electricity consumption at home, the group noted.

"The average household in America consumes 10,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh) a year, according to the Department of Energy. In 2006, Gore devoured nearly 221,000 kWh-more than 20 times the national average," the Tennessee Center for Policy Research said in a news release.

Last August alone, Gore burned through 22,619 kWh -- consuming more than twice as much electricity in one month as the average American family uses in an entire year. Gore's average monthly electric bill topped $1,359, the research group said.

Likewise, the natural gas bills for Gore's mansion and guest house averaged $1,080 a month last year.

"As the spokesman of choice for the global warming movement, Al Gore has to be willing to walk the walk, not just talk the talk, when it comes to home energy use," said Tennessee Center for Policy Research President Drew Johnson.

In total, Gore paid nearly $30,000 in combined electricity and natural gas bills for his Nashville estate in 2006, the Tennessee Center for Policy Research said.

That is a pretty one sided story.
He buys "green" energy in bulk that is created by environmentally friendly means such as wind, solar and methane gas.
Buying that kind of energy in bulk is much more expensive than buying regularly produced energy.
He is far from the bad guy, but most people don't care about the whole story, just what sells newspapers and creates hype.

But that is exactly what Gore has done with his movie.

Your an idiot.

This quote is funny... "The average household in America consumes 10,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh) a year, according to the Department of Energy. In 2006, Gore devoured nearly 221,000 kWh-more than 20 times the national average," the Tennessee Center for Policy Research said in a news release.

Well he does have a mansion. His power bill is supposed to be the same as the national average? :lol He lives in a Mansion...how the hell do they expect his power to be the same as the national average? The national average house is probably 25 times smaller than his house.

Jamie

liveforspd
no you are lol

rexxrally
The question that I wonder about, though, is: Where in the hell did the power company get the right to release all this information about Al Gore's power usage and how much money he spent to pay his bills last year?

Isn't there still a right to privacy? Holy mackeral, if I was Al Gore, I'd be suing the hell out of these people.

Inzane
When you are a politician (or past), you have no privacy.

But that is typical for North American society... how many millions of dollars and hours of press coverage were wasted on the whole Clinton-Lewinski BS?? seriously, who the hell cares if the President got a little on the side??

Global warming is a pretty big debate, with nothing proven. It's all still a big theory.

I had a girl at work tell me all about global warming and how she's given up on having kids because we're all going to be living like cavemen in 20 years 'cause we're gonna run out of energy from the glaciers and the currents, and stuff. It was good fun.

Thats insane! I guess thats fine if he has a big ass house.

hahah

I think a lot of people are too worried. I'm not saying not to be worried, but its getting a little out of hand.

Yes, the more pollution we reduce the better.

But their are crazy fanatics out there.

And liveforspd global warming does not always equal warmer climates. It also means colder winters.

tokes
I forgot to mention that the only reason she's scared of global warming is because of that movie. She actually said "An inconvenient truth made me decide not to have kids"

What often happens and I see it in this thread too is pollution gets brought up during discussions of global warming and greenhouse gases.

There is an important distinction to be made here.

Greenhouse gases causing this global warming phenomena consist primarily of Carbon Dioxide and Water. Guess what... those are natural products of combustion AND respiration. They are not "pollutants".

Now pollution, smog.... that is a separate issue. That involves Carbon Monoxide, NOx, SO2, unburnt hydrocarbons (some of which are carcinogens) and particulates.

And I'm pretty sure the national average house wouldn't have air conditioning throughout. That's a pretty biased fluff story.

You're kidding right? Global warming is a "theory"?

I thought people had moved past this "theory" garbage and on to the cause of global warming. ie. Is global warming a natural trend, is industry contributing to global warming etc.

snugs
...the Tennessee Center for Policy Research.... lol, it ain't an inconvenient truth, its a convenient smear. Teh noize masheen cometh! :p

It is.

There's no concrete proof that the world is warming faster now than any other time in it's history.

So what if gore doesn't efficiently use power for his mansion while he tells the average joe to get his environmental act together. Why would we expect our policy making political and intellectual upper-class to be subject to the same attitudes that are developed for us regular guys?

Want to reduce green house gases and be a green power person (not mentioning that the planet is actually cooler now than it has been in any sense of long term geological average)? Here's a couple ideas:

Figure out a way to put out coal seam fires. Coal seam fires in China release more CO2 in a year than all the cars and trucks in the states, and more than many countries' total CO2 production for a year. This is not to mention the pollutants they give off either. As a side note it may be worthwhile to look at China's 550+ planned coal fired power plants as well.

Develop legislation and regulation that allows individual homes to input energy into power grids. Then there will be an immediate and personal economic incentive to make use of renewable energy sources in our everyday lives. How cool would it be to have solar panels or a windmill on your home that actually run your meter backwards! This would make construction of energy efficient homes and use of energy efficient technologies very attractive to most energy consumers.

Work the pollution angle. Global warming may or may not affect the world like it did in the movie The Day After Tomorrow , but seeing a bigass brown cloud of smog over edmonton after being away for 6 years was a real downer for me. That's one reason I left asia. Ever been to a country that really doesn't care about the environment? Check it out sometime, because it freakin sucks, and we have some of the best air in the world here, and we should keep it that way. Not because some rich dude in the states says so while he flies around in his personal jet (that pollutes more in a month than I do in a year) but because it's damn nice to wake up to a fresh breath of air instead of having to blow brown shit out of your nose.

Just a few things I think would work.

Nothing like moving past these silly "scientific" notions of theory into the highly productive cognitive realm of belief.

I would say that we have contributed a small amount but not as much as the media are blowing it out of perportion.

Its sad that we live in a world wher you turn on the news or open the paper and all you see is anna nicole smith, and enviroment. What about the real issues of the world such as Berma, Tibet, Darphour........... The list goes on and on but they are not news worthy in our society.

THUD
Al Gore is a fuking idiot, His whole little movie about Global warming is SOOOOO full of BS and holes.
Not saying that it's not happening but man, K one part of the video shows a lake/sea that is drying up, The real reason why it's drying up is cause russa is diverting so much of the water to it that not much makes it into...just one hole in his rant.
Al gore has Also fired a handful of goverment scientices that have poked holes in his little video and suggested that we are actully abouit to go into a mini iceage, any govement scientice that dissagrees with him somehow gets fired everytime they speak up, it's Gores way or noway.
One guy was on a radio show a month ago and said that he was on the choping block anyway so he told what he thinks and why and jsut this week was back on the show tell how he got fired in a very odd manner the goverment is trying to discredit him in every way.
The new big money maker for this year will be anything global warming and anyway to make money off of it, so very sad

Thalo
I love the hypocrisy of these global warming "messiahs" (because the whole global warming theory has morphed from cult to religion), namely Al Gore and David Suzuki. Both pollute like no tomorrow, either in their Tennessee mansion or just from their driving/flying back and forth across the country. Both claim to be carbon neutral by buying "carbon credits" to offset their GHGs. I think the whole carbon trading scheme is bullshit because how can we be certain that the money actually goes towards reduction of greenhouse gases? Al Gore happens to own his own company that he buys his carbon credits from (the net result of this all being that he's sticking his own money into his own company while polluting like hell) that puports to invest in eco friendly energy. If we, as a country, had to buy carbon credits most of our money would be going towards a corrupt Russian dictatorship that happens to have a ton of excess carbon credits without even doing any sort of GHG reduction.

EK9Hatch
Actual PROOF that global warming is happening...
