Where do you guys get your groceries? I've been a safeway shopper basically forever and I'm wondering if the prices are still comparable to other places.
I spend an average of about $35-40 per week which usually includes bread (decent stuff, not the $.99 loafs), milk, some fruit, meals for supper, frozen juices, and random other stuff. I usually save between 15-25% using my Safeway Club Card which brings the total down to the above numbers.
Any of you guys exclusive Save-On-Foods shoppers? Superstore customers? Do they have club cards or are all the prices set?
Feel free to discuss.

Safeway here too. I went to Superstore once...blech. I went to pay and the lady asked me how many bags I wanted. So I answered "as many as it takes." I thought it was odd. So she says "Let's try 5", and hands my 5 plastic bags.
Not only do they make you bag your own shit, but they also make you guesstimate how many bags you're going to need. I was unimpressed. |

I go to Safeway. I find they usually have some pretty decent deals almost all of the time. Plus, its sweet when you get a double gas discount coupon. 7 cents off a liter is nice.
Plus, the accept Air Miles :)

Mostly Safeway but do hit IGA for a couple items along with Costco.
I don't do well in Supertouch all my shit foods. I can't handle all the molesting that goes on there. Fucking morons, and if your walking 3-4 people abreast I ain't going around you its through or nothing! Get some god dam manners! |

i used to work at sobeys so i like to pick up a few things form tere cause i still know a few people, and the bakery there is much better than that of safeway

i find safeway is good for most of the normal shopping |

I used to always shop at Safeway, but I find myself hitting up Sobeys more now since there are a few around the new house here. Oh, and I just got a Costco card again last week after not having one for about 4 years. That place is the fucking devil! You never leave with just what you intended to buy.
They do have some good deals for certain things though that you won't find anywhere else. I'll make maybe a monthly trip there and get cases of water, house stuff (toilet paper, etc. although it takes much more than a month to go through their 3452 roll pack), bulk packages of chicken breast/ground beef/steaks etc. I saw a couple of deep freezes there last week and I think I may go back to pick one up.
Oh, and socks. They've got awesome Russell socks there! I've never had socks last so long; they're just a great material. |

Real Canadian Wholesale is a good place too (I think thats what it's called)
I just picked up 3.8L of Frank's Hot Sauce for like $13! :D Super Super good deal. And yes...I like hot sauce THAT much.

I did not know that. All the more reason to never go back. |

| When we get groceries, we usually get up reeeeally early and hit up Costco. I have a large family, so we go through alot of stuff. When I am just buying for myself, I usually go to safeway just because they give out gas coupons. :) |

Being a former IGA/Sobeys employee, I am still faithful. Personally wouldn't touch a piece of Safeway meat (know too much) and their everyday prices are not so good. Now if by chance there is something posted in a flyer for a good deal I may hit it, but the deals rotate for each chain. I find IGA/Sobey's produce to be WAY fresher and better quality. Many Safeway stores keep it out until it walks off the shelf on its own. As well, IGA/Sobey's has rules in place to remove fresh baked products after a certain time frame...Safeway...you must pick though trying to find the "best before dates" And if by chance the date is good, it's usually dry as many stores ship between themselves rather than baking in-store.
For great deals on fresh produce, find a "From the Good earth" or "H&W Produce" (one of each on the N end)
Supertsore irks me with rude and ignorant people/customers leaving their big ass carts on the middle of the walk ways while they browse the aisles...although if you're going for bulk...you can save a few pennies. But is your sanilty worth it? Not too mention they ding you at the end for their crap ass bags that are only good for one time use (if you're lucky) Funny thing though, when I buy a carton of cigs, they give me a bag for free!
Costco is another sanity tester... |

| Save-On Foods (I was forced and now I enjoy shopping there) I probably spend about $500/month on groceries. |

Go to Safeway if you like to take it up the ass for pricing.
Superstore sells the same stuff for a fraction of the cost. Yes, the bags cost $0.04 but if you plan ahead and bring your own bags you can save yourself a whopping $0.20 assuming you need 5 bags.
Don't believe me, there is an article in one of the papers that does a price comparison of many groceries purchased at different stores. Guess who reigns # 1 for most expensive most times? Wait for it...Safeway.
Yes, you pay for what you get. I do not go to superstore expecting to get the best service in town. I expect crappy service for a stellar price.
Here is a thought. You put the stuff in your cart then moved it to the check out counter, then put it on the conveyor belt. Why do you need someone to take it off the conveyor belt and bag it for you? Are you that retarded that you do not know a squishable item such as bread should not be placed with milk in the same bag?
If I want my shopping experience to resemble service at 5 star hotel then I will go to safeway and pay the insane premium. But last time I checked I prefer to pay the lowest price for the same goods I can get at any grocery store. Service I could care less about when buying groceries. |

And you somehow think things are done differently at the other stores?
Everyone always says "I'll never eat there" or "I'll never shop there", but they are just blinding themselves to the fact it's just as bad everywhere else.

Superstore is actually a lot cheaper on many items - I pay just over $3 for 4L of Skim Milk where it's around $4 everywhere else. I'm sure if you went between the two stores you'd find the same thing on many items. |

I don't really have a regular place. For small trips it's usually whichever place I'm closest to, Sobeys if I'm at home. For buying in bulk I usually go to Canadian Wholesale or Superstore.
Probably 50% of my groceries are bought at a combination of planet organic/organic roots, the farmers market and good earth produce. (some of the cheapest produce in the city!) |

| real canadian wholesale and H and W produce, don't expect good service just grab your stuff and go, safeway is just retarded cause everything is so expensive... I eat alot of pineapple and cook with it as well, the difference in price is just insane. anywhere from 5.99-7.99 for a pineapple at safeway as opposed to h&w which is on average 3.99 and sometimes goes as low as 1.99 in the summer. Only time you'll catch me shopping at safeway is if I'm last minute shopping for a big dinner, why? because I know they'll have it in stock because they don't sell that much :) |

I normally shop at Sobeys.......
but lately I have been buying through Pic and del. The online grocery place.
If the produce was just a notch better I would be buying everything from them.
I just can't be bothered wasting an hour grocery shopping. 10-15 minutes..... pick the day/time for delivery and you are done. |

Long time Superstore shopper. Where do I start. Overcrowded, dirty, busted rusty shopping carts, rudeness, self packing but you do save some money shopping there.
Havent compared prices for a long time, but there doesnt seem to be any significant price savings between stores. It depends on the dynamics of what you're buying and how much of it. |

Buy-Low Foods...
I buy somethings at safeway or save-on if I'm leaving Edmonton late and buy low will be closed. But I walk around and most the shit costs more in those stores than in my shit town grocery store..
I buy some stuff at extra foods(owned by superstore) they even bag for you, and don' charge for bags, I bought 1 basket of stuff and it turned into 8 bags.
My only issue with the extra foods is brands, I like certain brands and yes I can taste the difference on the stuff I'm brand picky about. I find they won't have a number of hte better brands to try and push their president choice stuff |

I shop all around. about $400-$500 a month just for myself.
costco for the major stuff (mainly meat). they seriously carry the best steaks. buy whole too. not the pre-cut/packed stuff.
for the rest of the stuff I hit up all around -chinatown/superstore/t&t/safeway for basic veggies and stuff. |
