300 review - Click HERE for Original Thread

dtjohnst
Well, saw the 1400hr show at South Common today, thought I'd report back. Wow. I'd give you a nice long review about how the choreography and the special effects and whatnot are so spectacular.....but.....who needs it? It's REALLY predictable (and I'm speaking about the made-up parts not the historical parts), and yet I don't think anyone would really care. I'm a thinker and a history buff, and initially I thought I'd be a little miffed at the fact that shields are protecting the holder, not the man on his left, and that they aren't wearing armour, and that the evil persian empire consisted or hideously deformed goons.........but really, there's no time to think, your brain is too busy taking it all in.

I don't know if the ladies will like it. Women are basically paraded around like the modern-day sluts you meet at bars, making out with each other and any hideous freak who's got money and/or power, tits constantly exposed, not afraid to trade sex for something they want (which is really just prostitution, isn't it?), and so on. Which is great for us males, but I could see women being a little ticked. Although an army of 300 spartans marching along wearing red capes and ancient booty shorts is enough manly abs they might just forget about it.

To put things in perspective, there's no doubt it's one of the top 10 movies I've seen in my life, probably in the top 5, maybe even the top 3. It's never slow or dull, even during the "meanwhile, back at the ranch" type scenes entailing the political actions of the Spartan Council after Leonidas and his men march off.

AMAZING makeup and costumes too, for people who are into critiquing that kinda thing.

I'll give it a 9.5/10. It loses half a point because there are some REALLY ugly freaks and that ruined my appetite and I ended up throwing away half a thing of nachos. Half my nachos translates to half a point. It's a straight up trade.

Heh my wife is the one who wants to go see it, so we're heading in tomorrow

finally a movie that lives up to its trailer:thumbup:

NightmareMX6
 OMG that movie kicks soo much ass. Bloodiest movie I have ever seen.

DoubleDown
Here's all the justification you need to see the movie:

1/ War and violence
2/ Nudity
3/ Lesbians
4/ Monsters
5/ Throwing babies off cliffs

Honest to god, you couldn't cram any more testosterone into a single 2 hour period. Just go see it.

0range_240
This movie was everything I was hoping it'd be, for once a movie that lives up to the hype. Action scenes were amazing, and spartans give an all new meaning to the word badass.

Fuck me I can't wait to see this tomorow.

I heard it was coming in IMAX but couldn't fidn details on the IMAX website. Got a link?

T8R
Silvercity is playing it in Imax. Phone there for times.

GOT BOOST
I have tickets for the showing at the IMAX tonight at 7:00 pm. SUCKERS!!!! :D

I purchased them on Thurs evening. The IMAX Fri night shows were sold out. I went last night to pick up an extra ticket for my bro, but all the Saturday shows were sold out.

Dtjohnst,

Just link on the www.cineplex.com website for more info.
If you order the tickets online via JUMP (which is a scam in my mind) you pay an service charge of $1.00 per ticket for any movie. You still need to wait in line and redeem your tickets at the desk or a jump line up, just like everyone else that did not purchase the tickets online.

Orzel_pl
Very cool movie. I say 3/4. It looked stunning, the action sequences switched from slo mo to normal speed flawlessly. The only thing I would have done is better casting or explanation of the supporting characters. I would have liked to see a little more depth. Musical score was a 3.5/4, very snazzy aswell. Highly Reccomend, definite DVD buy.

The plot is based on the Battle of Thermopylae, which actually happened, and most of the details are historically accurate. They threw in some "Hollywood", of course, but compared to most "true stories", this is really close.

There's a monument ( link ) of King Leonidas to celebrate the Battle of Thermopylae.

Perhaps her problem is your misogynist misconstruction of the feminist stereotype, that any female would be offended by exposed breasts. Another possibility is that she is just saddened by your misinterpretation of the film itself. I will elaborate further:

1. The women being paraded about were slaves to Xerxes and only knew that life. It's not like they go on shift for 8 hours and then go home with a satchel of coins which they use to pay for their crack addiction.

2. Queen Gorgo offered up her body because it was the only solution left at her disposal, and it was the only way she had a chance at helping Greece. It was the ultimate sacrifice on her part, she wasn't just looking for a cheap lay.

3. The fact that she actually killed Theron is an action that empowers her. It undoes the convention of the obnoxious bitch that complains all the time but does nothing effective. Queen Gorgo is the ultimate representation of modern day feminism; she is powerful and effective, yet she retains her femininity. The fact that she does this in a severely patriarchal society makes her actions even more admirable.

4. Finally, all those manly abs and booty shorts you're talking about is cinematography geared towards men, not women. It is what the more informed would call, "homoeroticism."

You took my comment about women way too seriously dude. And I didn't misrepresent much. The women were slaves, as you said. No question. Ther Persian emissary spoke down about women. And do you really think the Oracles where living their dream life?

I wasn't impressed. It just didn't seem all that epic, like Braveheart. It was so short. Not enough battles.

I dunno, I walked out feeling pretty dissapointed.

See the trailer might just be the greatest trailer ever created. In that, they showed all the good shots in it, and it left you with a sense of I already know this. Thats why I gave it a 3/4, its definetly nowhere near a 10/10. Great movie though still, definetly want to go see it again.

I'm fairly certain that the Spartan fought in the nude. I'm guessing that the leather codpieces were added so that the movie would be abit more appealing to watch for hetero males.

With that out of the way, I thought the movie was very visual, a little dialogue, a feast for the eyes.

Who needs to have someone there yelping about how anguished they feel when the look on their faces says everything. Movies are very visual and in that, this movie gets high marks from me, it's extremely visual.

What makes or breaks a movie is good writing bolstered by good acting, on both counts comes up strong.

*possible spoiler ahead*

I would've like to have seen the Persian army get slaughtered at the end of the movie and that pompus Xerxes get what was coming to him.

LeadSled
I'm glad it wasn't any longer... too many movies are running far over 2 hours and it's like a job sitting down watching one. Zodiac is too long IMO even though it's a great movie.

This is one movie where I thought they ended it at the right time, the main character's story was over and that's what I wanted to see. And I was getting antsy from sitting in a theatre for almost 2.5 hours.

SilviaDrifter
haha can u say ADD....haha jus kiding....i think im gonna go see it a third time

I hope everyone realizes this is a movie version of the Frank Miller comic book, NOT a historical re-enactment. Everyone busting out all these arguments with how its not historically correct your looking into it too deeply and missing the fun.

That's like going in to see Jackass 2 and expecting Schindler's List.

Nope, they wore various body armor, red cloth, and face armor. Totally agree on the visuals though... so much of the emotion in the movie didn't need dialogue. Gerard Butler played that character to a TEE... the dude was so fucking intense the whole movie, haha.

Read my other post about the historic accuracy, heh. But I agree, if people are nitpicking about the way they held their shields, they might be missing the fun of the movie. Personally, I was expecting a big hollywood show where the "good guys" win and the hero gets the girl, and blah blah blah. I just thought it was a bonus that 90% of it was historically accurate.

*sigh* The only person who said anything about the shields was me, and if you read it carefully, what I said was that you don't even notice it.......aka not nitpicking.

As for their dress.......All males served in the military from 21-60 (30-60 as reservists). The brunt of them were Hoplites. Light infantry, basically spearmen.

Notice the chevron on the shield. That's was the symbol of a Spartan (and later any Greek) hoplite. And that spear is more a javelin than a spear. The hoplite also carried a small sword (it's hidden by the shield).

The more skilled and disciplined soldiers were assigned to a phalanx. The important thing to note here is that there's no such thing as a "phalanxman", all members of the phalanx were hoplites. Armour was the same, shield was bigger and they carried ginormous spears instead of flimsy javelins. They also had a specific size and shape. From the phalanx we got our modern officer system, and the explanation for why one of the modern officer ranks (lieutenant) basically translates to "placeholder".

Of course....this ONLY applies to Sparta. While other Greek states may have had phalanxes, they tended to be composed of a mish-mash of people, and therefore arms and armour was not uniform. As the only ancient Greek state with a formed, standing army, Sparta was the only one that had uniformity in their formations.

But no, they weren't naked. Tunics, greeves, breastplates, helmets, shields. And a cape, because that was a portable blanket and bedcloth. Not because they wanted to look like superman.

Alpha Gangsta
*ahem*
since we're being all historical up in hurr....

A Macedonian Phalanx (16 deep) developed by King Phillipe and used by Alexander later.

The Greek phalanx tended to be much smaller (3-4) persons in depth and they used much shorter spears.

anyways, I'm just being an ass. haha.

Oh yeah... umm.... awesome movie!
Very good job on recreating the comic into a movie.
Nice touch on the dialogue (spartan sayings and historical recounts)

Favorite part: When Stelios starts laughing as the arrows rain down on the spartan ranks. haha

Good luck finding an image of a Greek Phalanx though. :-( Besides, the extra long spears reinforce the point that their was a definite difference between a standard hoplite and a phalanx hoplite.

PS. Greek phalanx could be as many as 10-men deep, but it definately didn't form a 256-man Syntagma like the Macedonian.

I just saw it on Sat, in Imax... I think I was sitting too close because I found it grainy and couldn't tell the diff between what I was watching and the last movie I saw, shoot, experiance wise I think it was comparible to sitting at home with 5.1 and a projector....

As far as the movie goes, I missed the first couple of minutes, but I found it ended to soon, based off all the reviews on here and the fight scene clip I saw on u-tube, I was expecting more. I dunno just more.. It wasn't a bad movie, I just don't think it lived up to the hype.

IMO, what some people neglect to remember is that the director also did Sin City -which hints that it isnt going to be a typical hollywood blockbuster, as someone else said -it's no gladiator or braveheart.

Aside from similar cinematography between SIN and 300, the storyline follows a narrative tone, the director (and the movie) relies on its basis in historical content to draw viewers.
300 contrasts realism with the surreal, it shows human survival and pride mixed with a lot of action and some really great special effects and insights into human nature.
Huge insights into human nature.

Just a few 'cliff's notes'. Hopefully for those of you who havent seen it yet, this will help them enjoy the film a little more. Definatly worth the big screen price IMO -some of the cinematics really rely on being seen as larger than life.

SilverNeonRacer
I guess part of it was I couldn't tell the diff between the Imax and a regular theater... I guess if I saw them about the same seat back to back I might...

No, I gotta say, I didn't like 300. I felt very let down after walking out. Certainly nowhere near the hype and I don't understand people saying it was the "BEST MOVIE EVAR!!!1!!!1" It was short, plotless, the battle scenes were decent (Braveheart was better, others have done good battles, too), but nothing really went "WOW!" for me.

Jessica Alba ugly? To each their own, I guess, but seriously, there's a standard of women that pretty much every guy says is hot and she's one of 'em.

And no, Jessica Alba would not have made 300 a better movie. The Queen was pretty hot.

Ya know, I think if I haddn't read any reviews, or heard the hype, I probably woulda liked it better, I too felt let down, like I said I was expecting "more", More blood more gore, etc, etc.. kinda interesting that blood turns invisible when it hits dirt though.... heh you could see the cg blood squirt, but it quickly disappeared

Technically they are different directors. Robert Rodriguez did Sin city with a little help from Quenten Tarantino. He gave a directing credit to Frank Miller, but I don't think Miller did any real directing for the movie.

300 is directed by Zach Snyder with Frank Miller as executive producer.

Short? It was over 2 friggen hours.

And plotless... well I guess that's up to the viewer but I have to say I thought it had one of the most engaging plots I've ever seen. For me it was one of those films where I can't wait to see what happens next, I had a feeling I knew how it would end but the in-between was pretty intruiging.

It's still at 8.2/10 on IMDB so you're in the minority on this one in saying you didn't like it... I think people get too caught up in the hype and no matter how good it is the movie will fall short of that. I don't read movie reviews or watch trailers online so I usually have no idea if a movie is "supposed" to be good or not.

Either way, I just saw it again last night with a friend and it was just as good as the first time.

Just under 2 hours actually. 11x minutes, I'm thinking 118 but IMDB could confirm it.
