Anybody know what is causing this noise? [Soundclip Included] - Click HERE for Original Thread

AdamP
Redtop SR20DET

I put a screwdriver to the valve cover and listened and I didn't hear anything out of the ordinary. The car seems to drive fine as well no funny noises out of the ordinary. When I give the car a bit of throttle under the hood the noise dissappears. The sound can be described as similar to when you stack two dinner plates together.

Anybody have any idea?

maybe a bit of Detenation...

or.. something could be loose internally..

OR... It's just nothing out of the ordinary.

AdamP
I run 94 octane.

Invalid Zero
Take off the valve cover. There is a small plate that sits above the timing chain. It may have come loose somehow.

Doesn't matter if you run 94 octane... If your ingition is way too advanced at idle.. you'll be detenating... It's a simple fact.. and just a suggestion...

Because you said it goes away when you rev it up.. lead me to believe Ignition may be advanced a bit too much at idle.

Thanks for the input. Is this something I can check out myself? The furthest I go mechanically is the easy bolt-ons.

By the way, it could be that the noise is there at higher revs but it just is drowned out.

Here is another clip opening up the throttle slightly.

If the screwdriver doesn't pick up any unusual noises, I'd say Soulfly is right.

The car might need a valve ajustment.

AdamP
The valves sounds ok I think (no hard tapping, clicking, ticking).

From some other info I've been reading over the past day it may be the timing chain. The guides themselves may be rattling (they may be loose or the tensioner is a little weak). Apparently this is a pretty common problem and when it occurs most people just do away with the guides.

Now, I have limited mechanical experience. I can do minor bolt-ons and whatnot. Would this be feasible for me to do myself (take off the top and front valve cover)? I think I'd buy a new valve cover gasket, and put some rocker arm stoppers while I'm in there. I belive you gotta torque down the valve cover in a certain way as well.

Inside, Out..

in steps like....

9 3 1 5 7

8 6 2 4 10

But.. If you don't know what your doing.. You prolly won't be able to spot the problem.. so I'd suggest to have someone else with you in the process.. or.. take it in to a Nissan mechanic..

thanks for being smart enught top provide a sound clip, detonion at idle??? did i miss somthing? sounds like normal valvetrain noise. the reason you wont hear anthing on your valvecover is it dont toutch your valvetrain in any way, put the driver at the base of the cover and move it aroundl, pull off your filler cap and you might beable to hear it better

SilviaDrifter
get a rotary :dunno:

lovinthespeed
from the sound clip i would say mabey check your valves like kitrink said

Just my opinion, and it might be wrong, but like Chris F said, i think it sounds normal. I could be wrong though.

I'll take a look into that this weekend.

By the way Scott, do you still have that big Blitz boost gauge?

pull the valve cover off and at the nose of the engine you will see that the chain guide is either broken or is very loose.... I am betting on it.

Yes I still have that gauge, PM me
