| I'm looking into getting a JDM MR2, and I have found one. The problem is that when the car is cold it has an issue with starting. It fires fine, but it acts as though its flooded or something. You need to pump it and rev it to keep it going for a little bit. After a few minutes everything clears up and it runs good. It idles a bit weird in that it occationally runs a bit fast then slow, but its very subtle. It will be fine to shut off and turn on again until the engine cools down. It is a turbo as well and I figure its been modified to run richer than stock. Any ideas about what this could be and how much it would cost to repair? Any idea about a place I could take it to to diagnos and repair? I want to know what I'm getting into if I buy it. Thanks. |

| Could be as simple as fouled plugs or possibly a dirty sensor. Start with the basic tuneup type things. Flush all the fluids, new plugs, new o2 sensor, new air filter, new fuel filter, etc. |

| clean or replace the idle control valve, car needs more bypass air to run when cold, therfore requiring more throttle, also coolant temp switch might cause the comp to think the car is warmed-up, even though it's cold and requires more fuel till it's warm. |

| Thanks for the advice. So you think this problem is fairly cure-able and it shouldn't stop me from buying an otherwise good condition car? |

| sounds like something where the repairs arent gonna cost much, but it might take a little bit of trial and error to solve the probelm. I would not let it stop me from buying the car f I really liked it. |

sounds like it's not getting enough fuel when cold, maybe it's not kicking into a high idle when cold
i just upgraded my throttle body and intake manifold, and the car does not kick itself into a high idle upon first starting it because of the aftermarket parts, i just had to crank up the idle to about 1,000 rpm. When it was stock it would start at 1,200 rpm then drop to around 6 or 800 after warming at high idle for 1 - 2 minutes. |

To me it sounds like you have a leak on the intake manifold.
When I blew a hose off my intake manifold, my car would drive fine. But sometimes when I came to a stop it would die.
To get it running again, I would have to crank it over about two times and give it a bit of gas.
Just check the ports on the back of the IM.
Also check your AFM, it might be messed up. |

my car did the same thing, in the cold it was really hard to start untill it warmed up ...it was the coolant temp sensor...
most likly its some sort or sensor |

| These are great ideas, thanks guys. It looks like I'll be getting the MR-2 so I'll give these ideas a shot and see if it fixes the problem. |
