eclipse battery drain? - Click HERE for Original Thread

project 4 door
this is going to be a long one....thought i would let you know...

ok so it starts like this , my father and i were out for a dirive when out of know where my radio turned off .. i thought nothing of it i thought it might have just been a wire touching .... so that was fine but then it started to flash on and off on and off ...again a little weird but i still thought that it was a wire.......Then as i had the car in cruise control the car started to slowdown then speed up slowdown then speed up.... i was like what the phuck?
so i took it off cruise and was driving normal but the car had like NO power what so ever it was gutless..... and the sterio was still flashing...... i had no clue what was going on..
we finally got back into town and it was still acting up UNTILL i was almost home the seemed to have its balls back and everything seemed fine... i got home turned the car off and tried to start it again..."nothing" we boosted the car and i checked it out and coldn't find nothing wrong ..... i just bought a new altanator for it like 1 month ago... so i figured it was the battery so i took the battery to canadian tire and they checked it sure enough it was toast....so i got a new battery....car worked fine for about a day and a half then the battery died again on me, the battery light on the dash isn't lit when the car is on and the bulb isn't burned out because it comes on when i just turn the key ..... the fuses are all fine and the sterio wire has no break ..... i am so confused what all could it be ???

Please help ....

this is silly but are your grounds secure and is your negitve terminal tight?

negitive turmnel is tight grounds seem ok but havent checked them all yet

best suggestion i would have is go get them to test the new battery cuz i had almost the same thing happen with my 91 laser (aka eclipse) without my radio going nuts. i replaced the battery and it worked for liek a day then died and wouldnt start without jumping it. so i took the battery back and it was a bad cell. got a new battery again and its been good since then. other than that make sure that the battery isnt getting grounded out somewhere from the positive line. ive seen that before too and it repeatedly killed the battery.

bump ...any other sugestions

Replace your alternator.

but if it was the alternator wouldn't the battery light be on?
i know that the light isn't burnt out because it comes on when i turn the key .....

what about the alternator relay? is there anyway to check that ?

Before anything, get a voltmeter and familiarize yourself with it. Car off, battery should be ~12V (possibly down to 11 or so). Running it should be ~13-14V. If it's not 13-14V, there's a problem with the alternator, or the wiring associated with it.

The alternator relay isn't a relay at all, it's just a diode and a resistor. The alternator on a 1G is stupid easy. The lightbulb in the dash needs to be good (there's a diode in the dash as well), if it burns out the relay does the same thing. Those 2 things are failsafes for one another, they are run in paralell.

Check the fusible link on the battery wiring itself (on the positive terminal, says ALT I think, 80amp if memory serves). If all that is good, then start checking for loose connections.

My money's on the shitty alternator. I have a bosch alternator here that I bought for the colt, and used maybe a month before I parked it. I paid near 250 bucks for the thing, if you need it let me know and we can work something out.

thanks "fatbastard"...lol ... actually i went and got the alternator tested today and the berson doing it said that they said the the alternator wasnt charging 14v so they said thats probably it luckly the alternator i have on it is 3 year warrnty and i paid the same amount for it...like 300$ and its toast already ...man that sucks .....but i checked the fuses at the battery and the ones on the "under the hood fuse box" the alternator 80amp fuse is still good ... and well if i understood correct and you say that the battery light in the dash and the "relay" under the hood are connected and if one blows or is no good then the other one does to then ; then the relay and bulb are fine cause the bulb works fine...... i get my ne alternator tomorow and i will put it on... i am going to :fingersx: and hope it works... but now i hope i didn't ruin my battery for letting it die so many times ......but meh i have a 5 year warnty on that so not that big of a deal .... thanks for the help ....
