My winter beater is an 87 Celica GTS w/ 3SGE 5spd. Ever since I got the car, the tach has acted a little wonky. When the car is cold, the tach will go up, and get stuck at the highest RPMs I take it to. If I put it in neutral, the needle will slowly fall back down, but its very very slow. It just doesn't move fast at all until the car warms up.
Once the car is warm, the tach needle moves freely and acts like it should. Is there any logical reason for this?
The reason I ask now, is the speedo just died on Saturday. I'm going to replace the speed sensor, but I may pick up a new cluster too when I'm at the junker.
Any ideas? |

wait, does the ENGINE REV at high revs the entire time too?
Or is it just the needle? |

| I had a few winter beaters that did that too. Its an old car, shit expands / contracts then stretches and gets all fucked up. Replace the cable or wait till the car warms up to drive it. |

| my car does that too, i think the lubricant in the tach becomes cold and hard so the needle cant move freely , its nothing big i'd just drive with it |
