how hard to do myself,i never done one before.i tackled everything else except a clutch.
where and approx how much for someone/business to do it?
i,m pretty sure i,m going to do for myself to get the experience,not to mention save the cash.any pointers would be great.

if you are mechanically inclined, its not too hard, but if you haven't done one before it's quite the job... it also depends if its front wheel drive or all wheel drive, as there's the transfer case bolted on....
i'd say easiest thing would be to get one of the service manuals out for that car and use it, works wonders when you follow instructions, if you dig into it headfirst without knowledge of what you're doin, you are going to run into problems
and make sure you put all the bolts back where they came from and hook all sensors back up, and have a couple jacks on hand |

ive got no fear in taking it apart and reassembling.
i,m looking for pointers to smoothen out the ride.
wether it takes a day or two is no big deal.just want to be efficent and do some homework
IE: first remove side axle.
let go engine mounts on # side
etc,etc.
its front wheel drive.
ive rebuilt the head,removal,installed.just to say when it came time for 50 thousand belt change it was effortless due to past experience.
someone with past experience on the clutch of my model car
give a dog a bone,lol,gives a few pointers.

Get a Haynes manual - it will cover it all.
If you have a FWD then the only real potential problem that the instructions won't cover is how to remove the axles if you can't get the axle nut's off. |

^^ go out right now and buy your manual, beats pulling your hair out when you realize you have no idea what your doing and your ride is in a dozen pieces so you have no wheels to go buy one....
I know how to do that on my car... I had to learn the hard way but I can now do a clutch change while leaving the axles in :p *EDIT* not in the transmission obviously, in the hubs it should have read... my bad.
If you absolutely have to take the axle nuts off and they are refusing to come off with a snipe/impact/WD-40 (or whatever you prefer)/praying to your prefered deity..... you can drill and chisel them off like I had to (after dropping my cv and balljoint)
Take a good drill and a couple of different sized drill bits (can't remeber what I used) drill few pilot holes in a row into the axle nut, then swap drill bits and make the holes bigger, making extra careful sure you don't chew into your rotors.. then take a big steel chisel and a BFH and break it on the holes you drilled, it should just fall to the floor in two pieces.
My axle nuts were the ones they installed at the factory in 1984... we threw everything we had at it... and this is what I ended up having to do.
Make sure you have new axle nuts on hand before you do this, mine were $8/each from the dealership.
*EDIT*
don't use heat on them, unless you really know what your doing because you stand a good chance of cooking the bearings in your hubs. |

i own a manual for which i have read many times for required repairs ive done in past
its not always clear.just looking for tips and tricks to make this job an easier task.
"oh thats what they meant"....."oh this is what i got to do"......
...."what the fack does that meam"......read it over and over till it makes sense,cause u know your the one putting it back together,its your ride so its got to be done proper or else ur out ur ride or it crapps out on the road
you ever go through the book and find yourself in one of the above senerious.
ya we all have.its much easier doing it second time round isnt it............ya it is.
so again just lookin for a few pointers in relation to my 91 front wheel drive talon from someone thats already done the job.

The clutch on a FWD Talon is straightforward - I did mine strictly by looking at it and figuring it out.
The only challenge you'll face it whether you can pull the axles out properly first (By removing from the hub). As well, I'd advise replacing the axle seals at the same time ($3/side). |
