hey guys. i dont really know too much about the subi sti's and just wondering if i could get a little feedback. just wondering what maintenance is like maybe some common problems i might encounter, pro's and cons pretty much.. looking at purchasing one and it is used so of course i will be checking it out but i'm a little worried that its more than likely been bagged but hopefully not! just a heads up what i should be looking out for..oh and just your overall opinions..thanks everyone :D

Go to www.nasioc.com They have tons of info on there. I think they even have a forum for people that are about to purchase a wrx, sti, fxt, and the likes, to be able to ask the questions you may have before buying.

I have an 06 wrx. I love the damn thing!!

Hope this helps.

If your a stickler for gas, then this isn't the car for you. The ONLY drawback to a STi is the fact that it sucks gas like its crack. Modding a STi is pretty damn expensive too, but if you buying one, then you shouldn't be worrrying.

thanks guys! well right now i'm driving an fx45..i'm assuming it couldn't be worse than my v8 on gas...right?? hahah

I had a 04 sti and it was pretty cheap to maintain if you have $80 for the synthetic oil changes. I had a couple issues that were delt with under warrenty.

Modifing the sti is pretty cheap. For $2000 you get a full exhaust and ecu that will put you up to and over 300whp (stock they dyno at around 240whp). My buddy had one that had the full exhaust and ecu and that thing just ripped. I wanted to eventually mod mine but I already have a summer toy. It was a great car. I miss it sometimes but I have 1 kid and another on the way so the sti is too small for that. Keep your fx 45.

One thing is with the big brembos on it, it makes it hard to find aftermarket wheels to fit over them. You usually have to go to the more expensive wheels. Also when having to do the brakes, the brembos are pretty aggressive so they chew up the rotor as well so you have to replace them everytime you do the brakes.....gets pretty pricey.

I have owned an 02 WRX and now I have an 06 WRX. I was going to buy the STi but the WRX is just a better fit for me right now as I drive alot on the highway for work. The WRX is alot smoother and quieter car (not mine now as I have a full exhaust on it) But if I get a job where Im not on the highway I will look at an STi. My WRX now will walk on a stock STi, and even a lightly modded one. Im putting out 292whp/318wtq (dynoed at subracing and tuned by PDX tuning)

well thats the case with all the sports car anyways....
so if u have decided on buying a sports car then no matter what car u pick....gas will always be an issue.

B.S.

It's just a PITA since on a boxer engine they're on the sides...

If I remember right they are like $25/plug too.

With small hands it's not that hard - but for those of use with big hands it'll take longer than usual.

thanks again for the feedback guys :) i'm actually looking for some feedback on the is300 as well..not too sure if i should start another thread but i'll see if i get respose to that in here..same q's maintenance costs common problems etc.. thanks again!

st185celica
sorry if i hijack this thread but im also interested in the maintenance part of the STi. from what i understand the cost of maintenance isnt ridiculously high just because its the top trim level. ie how everything is 10x more expense for the M3
is this right?

also what about the turbo during the winter?
any major problems with that?

thanks

Cold air is dense air. Dense air + turbo = more power.

No problems w/ that.

Changing the plugs in a subie isnt that bad if you know what you are doing. My buddie is a subaru mechanic and he can do it in no time. (mind you hes done it a million times) And you dont have to take off the turbo or anything with the exhaust. But there are a few things you do need to yank to get at them.

bigboy786
tell me about it i just paid Subaru $200 to change mine and they tired charging me 45 a plug can you imagine
