car no starty... - Click HERE for Original Thread

someguyincanada
yea so this morning I tried to start the car, nothing.
before anyone asks

lots of gas
batteries are charged
there is compression
I drove it last night no problems
just when i turn the key nothing

I was wondering if anyone would help me out with this.

Jason

well if "nothing" at all happens, like your speedo lights dont even come on, i would check the ignition(wires..plugs from the ignition etc)

alarm or car starter installed??

Ethanol
I think he means that when he turns the key to crank, It turns over, but it doesnt start. I would check if there is spark, make sure the fuse for the ignition is not blown either.

crazy240sx
and is it automatic, i had a car that wouldn't do nothing unless i slammed, and i mean fuckin slammed the bitch into park, then it'd work, or neutral

whoops, didnt see the compresion part

someguyincanada
it is automatic, when i turn the key there is nothing. no power to the lights, dash etc. the car is too old to have a car alarm and starter. you're looking the at the anti theft and starter right here. lol.

daytonagord
what car? year and model and engine?

check your battery terminals if NOTHING has power at all.
if your domelight still works could be an ignition switch or starter problem. but if nothing has power check your batery, battery conections.
if it is a GM check the wires on the starter as alot of the time they run the power to the starter then out to everything else.

Ravendarat
If you get nothing on the key turn but you have things like interior lights and headlights than I would guess a problem with the tumbler, do you know how to Hot Wire the car, if so I would try that, it would eliminate or point out the tumbler as the issue

someguyincanada
its a 1987 dodge colt e I dont know what the motor is. its not the turbo one..

someguyincanada
would anyone want to come over and take a look at it? if you do can you please pm me
thanks
Jason

I'm surprised no one has asked this one yet:

Does the battery have juice? Go ask your neighbor to come over and try to give you a boost, maybe your battery conked out or something.

daytonagord
he said in the first post his battery is charged :D

Ethanol
and that he has compression so the starter works

dtjohnst
Being charged and being functioning are 2 different issues altogether.

And I have no idea how he determined he had compression. He turns the keys and nothing happens at all....so.......?

:dunno:

Just a suggestion. Battery is the easiest to rule out as a cause of problem just by connecting your terminals to another car with booster cables and giving it shit. If it doesn't run, you've wasted what....8 seconds? Maybe 9?

daytonagord
true, but a loose battery cable is just as easy to check

dtjohnst
True. Even easier.

someguyincanada
the battery is charged, i had used it the night prior. iv had no problems before with the electrical on it and the batteries connections are tight.

I once drove to 7-11 and my car wouldn't start after, turns out my battery was completely fubuckered. That's kinda the way things go when they break: they work one minute, then don't the next.

I would seriously try the boost if you haven't done so yet.

someguyincanada
dtjohnst

would you be willing to check it out for me? as I dont like to get spiked hair if you know what i mean

dtjohnst
You don't know how to boost a car?

There should be instructions in the owner's manual that came with your car. I'm not driving across the city just to connect two wires, especially since beyond that I can't help you with anything at all.

battery may have gone dead over night. in that case.

try a boost like said before try that first.

Ethanol
It's impossible to get spiked hair [electrocuted] from a 12 V vattery unless you hooked 10 of them up in series... then it's like havion household current times 40 since the breaker of the house is rated 15 amps while the battery can put out 600 amps. [dont try this at home kids]

that aside, it is impossible to get electrocuted from anything in your car, just dont touch the sparkplug wires while the car is running. even if you did touch it, it's only a shock like static electricity, so.. you wont die.

daytonagord
yeah even a shock from a plug wire is only a quick sting :D been ther done that....more then on time. LOL

someguyincanada
anyone wanting to give ole jason a boost? it will only take a few min....

daytonagord
I would but I'm a bit far...calgary actually

someguyincanada
I also found the cause, it was a loose wire... doesnt explain the dead battery

My uncle was a mechanic for half a century, he routinely tested plug wires by holding one on his tongue while someone cranked the starter.

The real concern with boosting is if you do it horribly wrong, the battery might explode. But you'd really have to be a moron to cause that big a problem.

Ethanol
just remember, red is positive, black is negative, dont mix the 2 up. here i'll get a video for you:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3b9bXLl-Jk

You can leave the car with the good battery running while you start the dead car.

Ethanol
what area do you live in?

someguyincanada
I got it boosted but thank you for offering. gf had ama, I didnt know about. had them out at about 1230 this afternoon

Ethanol
how is it running now?

someguyincanada
Its running okay. it was a wire that came off the battery that came loose. i still dont know why the battery was dead....

Ethanol
maybe because the wire that was loose caused a small drain, or over the night a light was on. back during winter break, my car had a sticky brake light switch, so one morning I went out to start the car and the battery was dead, had to push it out of the driveway and then get the other car. I charged the battery though and then sprayed the brake light switch with some WD40, and problem fixed. maybe you left a light on?

glad to hear it's running nicely now
