The ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ alum will compete as a pro driver on the racing circuit full-time
Where do child stars go after they’ve lost their cuteness and just can’t catch another break? Well, if bad TV movies and a cycle of drugs and despair don’t pan out, they can always make like Frankie Muniz and race cars.
The former Malcolm in the Middle star has announced he’s quitting acting to become a professional Champ Car driver. (We’re guessing “quitting acting” is code for “can’t get a script,” but hey, whatever makes you feel better, Muniz.)
The 21-year-old will be starting from the back of the grid at the upcoming Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, Calif., where he’ll compete for a win in the Champ Car Atlantic Series.
Muniz won the Toyota Pro/Celebrity race at Toyota Grand Prix in 2005. He also raced for Jensen MotorSport in the 2006 Formula BMW USA series.
Said race spokeswoman Sherry Perez, “[Muniz has] had such success as an actor at such a young age, and now it’s almost like he’s starting over again ... as a race car driver.”
In an attempt to be taken seriously, Muniz is sending a fierce follicular signal to naysayers. He’s cut his little-boy-lost hair into a spiky new Mohawk.
We hope Muniz’s new career takes off – after all, the last thing the world needs is "Agent Cody Banks 3."

Agreed. Props for making a risky career change, and more props if he can compete at such a high level. |

| The fact that he can get a ride at such a high level says that he must have some skill to back up the talk. I guess we'll see how he does this summer though. |

I watched last year's celebrity race before the Champ car race on TV... He actually has some ability. He was driving nice, clean and smooth. He had at least one skillful pass on another car, but I think that might have been lap traffic.
Oh yeah, he beat Jesse James for sure, though that may not be saying that much, and I think he beat someone else with a better reputation - like Jay Leno or Paul Newman but not either one of them...
Let's see how he does this year, if he's no good, it'll be the only time we see him. He if he has talent, we'll see him move up the ranks. |

| He has the money and time to take in a lot of driving schools and get loads of seat time. As for the champ car thing, when a series expects its drivers to bring a majority of the sponsorship in themselves. You have to expect things like this. It should be interesting that’s for sure. I personally still question his ability. Most people driving open wheel cars at that level started racing when they were in the single digits age wise. | Remember, that he isn't racing a Champ car. He's in an Atlantic car. He should be able to do fairly well with a season of Formula BMW under his belt. |

| i don't think i can agree with that. open wheel racing is so different then any closed wheel series... |

I really hope he has improved over the last year a lot.
I saw him last year racing in Lime Rock Park, and he was not good. He was DFL for most of the race until there was a full course caution when he was finally able to catch up. Frankie was quite the joke to the pro open wheel racers and instructors I was with that weekend, and I was able to see why. He was also the only driver who was unapproachable in the pits; he had an arrogance to him which was rather funny almost considering the drivers who were 10 times better were hanging out with everyone else and not acting like they were king shit. |
