Second time dealing with Martin @ AFI and once again it was a pleasure. First time was to get my manifold tig welded and this time was the downpipe turbo flange.

I have to say that the downpipe was ALOT better than I expected. The flange was wider in spots and required cutting and bending.

Props to their new welder Ryan for the job, I was very pleased that the flange stayed true (the manifold was welded by the previous welder and incured alittle heat warp). Can't wait to come back, next time the car will be getting dynoed.

You sure that the flange wasn't warped from the process the company used to cut it? He welded up mine and his manifolds and both of our flanges came warped.

Impossible. I get my flanges water cut. He warped it.

Sorry about that, I pre heated the shit out of the flange to prevent any warping but I guess I didn't give it enough post heat when it was cooling down. I am still learning and with Ryan being a journay man welder he has lots to teach.

Haha hey man I didn't know that was you lol. The manifold is fine Kris, it only warped alittle, maybe a cool down period inbetween runners or something would have helped... but I have to admit Ryan did a great job, really impressed.

Bit of an update, flanges have to be milled. Downpipe leaks at the turbo flange (even with a gasket) and the head flange on the manifold also was warped and the front 3 cylinders leak pretty bad...

Because of this I can't really recommend anyone for Tig welding on stainless items at AFI...

Kinda sucks but what can ya do.:(

DSM
I dont remember it being that bad, definitely not worse than mine and I had no issues with it sealing, same with Flip's. Our flanges were laser cut and came warped for the begining, about 1/8" across the flange before I started welding it.

newaccorddriver
most flanges become slightly warped after it is welded onto. i think someone on HMT made a manifold which didnt have to be milled, but it was 6 separated flanges on the manifold rather then a single flange

Well I have an 1/8 inch gap for the most part of the flange and I installed it, torqued it to spec and everything and still it leaked pretty bad.

In comparison I have a b16 turbo manifold, it does have stress cuts but the flange is dead straight on that thing..

Sorry Kris, I didn't think it would be an issue, but even after just firing the car up it didn't seal, it didn't get any better when it was hot either.

The downpipe wasn't too bad but on the wastegate corner it leaked, not too much but still enough to have to get it fixed.

DSM
Well that is shitty, I guess me and Ryan are going to have to figure something out so this doesn't happen any more.

Sorry about any problems with the weld job Dean. Though I would appreciate and encourage anyone to contact us first and let us attempt to resolve any issues before posting up bad feedback.

Unfortunately there is only so much that can be done without the added expense of ficture welding headers and down pipes. We spent a lot of time pre-heating that down pipe so if it was at all warped it could not be avoided without some sort of Jig.

We would be happy to fixture weld your stuff if you do not want to get it re-surfaced after, but unfortunately that adds a cost that most wont pay.

Sorry for any inconvenience again Dean... Yours is the first bad feedback I have heard yet of our fabrication.

BTW, last I heard from you the down pipe you got us to weld to the flange did not clear anything as you had designed and would not fit in the car??? Who did you get to weld it up the second time?

The only way that this could have been avoided is if the flange was bolted down, so ya a jig would have been the wat to go.

I'm sure you would but with as busy as you guys are I'm sure this was a side job that would just be a waste of your time.

I just took the pieces into a machine shop and got them milled (no need for gaskets now).
