I think for certain products it is a good idea, which products is it a waste and which products is it a must?
I am buying a 42" LCD and dont know whether to get the FS PSP, do I buy it or not? |

Personally, I tend to decline the extra warranty on most products...my desktop PC and LCD Projection tv I bought both at Future SHop in the past year and a half.
I did get the extended plan on my laptop though becasue they area a little easier to damage/more expensive to repair.
As for a LCD TV, I probably wouldn't get the warranty, because I have never seen a TV break from just sitting in one spot in the first 3 years of it life...not saying it doesn't happen, but just haven't heard of it....just my 2 cents... |

| As long as you get a manufacturer's warranty, I wouldn't bother. If it lasts more than a year before breaking, there'll be something nicer on the market anyways. |

| The way I think about it is that the extra how-ever-much dollars it costs to buy the extended warranty/service plan is worth it for the headache you might save later on down the road. :dunno: |

I used to work at Futureshop. And what it costs employees to get the PSP (warranty) is very cheap.
So if you can, find someone who works their to staff it for you.
Other wise say the PSP on a 2000 item is 400$. Just put that $400 dollars towards a new one in the unlikely even that it fails. It is almost 25% of the purchase price.
Like previously stated for a TV I would say no... |

| Remember, when purchased through some credit cards they will also give you an extra year of warranty. That may be your best (free) option. |

Where's the best place to buy a tv?
What's the best bang for your buck? An LCD vs Plasma vs Projection? |

| I dunno man, I bought it one mine without flinching, same when I had my mom and my friends buy them. Id rather have the piece of mind on it. And the price depends on the TV technology itself now, its usually not that bad |

basically theres a couple things to keep in mind when buying a tv
#1 > best buy and future shop isnt a extended warranty, an extended warranty is an extension of a manufacturers warranty which also called a 1 year LIMITED warranty
#2 > BB/FS basically w/ n e TV over i believe 50" if u have the service plan, I service tech will come to your house, diagnois the TV and if it needs to be repaired will pay for the shipping and delivery of it.
I certainly believe that on big ticket items its worth it! |

My old man bought a 53" Bigscreen 5 years ago, he paid for the extra warranty, it worked great for the 3 year manufacturers warranty, and then at 4 years and 11 months, it died... So he got a brand new 60" Widescreen with stand for free in return, because obviously they didn't make the same model anymore, for my old man, it was definately worth it.

I would say a big yay. Now dont get me wrong I used to be all nay about it untill I started buying more expensive tv's. My first time when I bought a samsung dlp a few yrs back I bought the warranty. Sure enough 6 months later the color wheel went. I got it completley replaced free.
The next time I went in and bought a panasonic lcd hdtv projector, this time I didnt even hesitate and paid for the warranty. again sure enough roughly six months later the lcd panel went on it. To repair it which I seen the bill was going to cost $2200 just for the panel. Again it was replaced completley free of charge.
This is why now when I make purchases of $1700 or more I get the warranty. Even if I dont use it at all its worth it. PLus I believe some places now are offering your money back or half of it if you dont use the warranty.

Idiots eh? So I should have spent the extra couple hundred bucks on my tv that I bought 6 years ago that hasn't had a problem? I know several other people that never purchased extended warranties and their tv's are all over 4 years old and still working properly. All of us are just praying our tv's will die so we have a good excuse to go and buy a new one. lol
Sure it helps the odd person, but in general they are a waste of money.
If I would have purchased extended warranty on everything I own like you I would have wasted a shitload of money. I can't even think of anything I have bought that has died before I want to replace it anyway. I'm glad you are overpaying for everything you buy. |

If you are a techie like me...doing research before buying, having the knowledge about the brand you're buying, then your success rate of future failure will be significantly less. That goes with everything you buy, not just electronics. Hence, no need to buy extended warranty. For an example, I can go buy a Honda over the likes of any domestic and it almost always will last longer than any domestic vehicles that are in the same class because we all know that Honda is a good brand and its reliability is one of the best. The point is, you have to know what you're buying and doing some homework before hand. Anybody buys extended warranty for vehicles are dummies. |

Buying warranties in not that different than buying non-required insurance. The company offering the warranty/insurance has figured out the likelihood of in breaking, the average cost of repair & added in their profit margin. You should, in the laws of big numbers, lose money on these plans. That being said, you have to ask yourself: Would I be able to comfortably afford another one if it breaks down? if the answer is no, then an extended warranty might still be the right choice.
For every story that you hear of an extended warranty/insurance policy paying off big time, there will always be a silent majority that bought the plans & nothing happened.

| or you could go to costco, buy a tv, and return it whenever it shits the bed. they are #1 for returns no questions asked. even after warranty expires. |

| I bought a 2 year warranty with my laptop. After a year and a half, it didnt work anymore, took it back and got it fixed for free. The 2 year warranty was only like 129 bucks, but it saved me buying a new laptop. |

| This might be common knowledge but I'll throw it out there anyways. Anything you purchase at visions electronics and buy the service plan on you will get a visions store credit sent to you if you dont use the service plan. Purchase TV, buy 3 year service plan. TV breaks in that 3 years they send a tech to fix it or replace it, but if your TV doesnt break after 3 years you receive a store credit for the full amount of the service plan in the mail. Its really a no lose situation considering Visions will match if not beat other stores prices. |

besides ur comment of visions giving u a store credit, they dont have the best creditability for customer service. |

| Well i have a Hitachi 52' projection and 65' Toshiba project both a few years old and i purchased the psp. When it came to my 65 i have called the Future Shop Tv Service many times. And when it came to a 52 called them once but that for like a $500 part because my tv wouldn't power on. Like if u get the warranty u get like free picture tuneups and stuff like that. But now with like every one buying lcd's or plasma over 40" the cost of the psp is kinda costly around $400 alot to add on your tv price. But later on if your tv screwed you better be ready to bring out some cash. I looking at buying a new samsung lcd and probably not gonna buy the psp. Don't know if is gona help By the what t.v are u looking at |
