Attention Autocrossers,
Due to circumstances beyond the club's control, the May 25 Alberta Solo Association Solo II event cannot be held at the BFG warehouse in St Albert. Fortunately, we have been able to book a portion of the airstrip at Namao.
Namao has a lot more room to run, but there is one major drawback: Every person and vehicle that will be attending the event (including spectators and non-competition vehicles) must be pre-registered and the list must be submitted to the base one week in advance. That means today. In fact, the list has already been submitted. The good news is that we should be able to amend the list sometime next week.
If you attended one of the ASA events at Namao last year and were on the list, then you should still be on this year's list. However, it might be a good idea to complete the registration again, just in case someone (i.e. me) screwed up.
If you plan on attending this event:
1. Go to the ASA website (http://www.albertasolo.com)
2. Follow the link to the Schedule page and then the link to the Namao pre-registration. Don't use the link for pre-registration to the Corvette Challenge. Use one of our event links. Also, don't worry if the schedule still says the event is at BFG. The page will get changed eventually.
3. Follow the instructions and fill out the on-line form to submit your registration info.
That should do it. There is a chance that we won't be able to update the list next week (like if the one person responsible for receiving and forwarding the list to the base security people is out of the office), but we should be OK.
That is all. |

Made the cut off too. If you read the email it says that you are registered to be on the base but that doesn't mean that you have a spot to compete. My advice is to get there early because the entries are capped. At what amount, I'm not sure.

This event is held by ASA, and thus the rules are slightly different compared to the Corvette club. ASA is stricter and u'll find their courses A LOT more technical.
As w/ the passenger rule, IF u are a newbie, yes they MIGHT allow a ride-along, but that will probably be only an experienced person. This rule only applies for your 3 official runs, if there are fun runs passangers are allowed.
It doesn't hurt to ask the organizers. |

I'm not an organizer, just "the guy who foolishly volunteered to look after the Namao registrations". Ask away, I'll answer what I can. |

Is the tech inspection more strict than the ECC?
My helmet's only DOT rated, will that do? (it passed on the 11th)
Are there classes?
I'd like to volunteer, if I volunteer does that dq me from running?
Where would I volunteer?
Are there prizes, points, or just bragging rights?
Can more than one driver drive a car, and can one driver drive more than one car?
Will there be a concession? :P
Thats all the q's I really have for now.. but I"m sure my lack of calm will draw more in the future..

I can field some of these questions.
quote: Is the tech inspection more strict than the ECC?
Yes they are, sort of. They will check the same things but maybe with a more scruitineering eye.
quote: My helmet's only DOT rated, will that do? (it passed on the 11th)
If it is ONLY DOT rated and not M95 or greater, it will NOT pass. U'll then either need to borrow a friend's helmet OR borrow the "loaners."
quote: Are there classes?
No, currently there are no classes for ASA events. But if u want to run in Red Deer for the national events or even down in Calgary, they are classed according to CNAC rules (Canadian National Autocross Club ?)
quote: I'd like to volunteer, if I volunteer does that dq me from running? Where would I volunteer?
No, u can still run and volunteer. Both Pat and I will be running (myself for sure at least). In terms of where to volunteer, easiest is just to help out marshalling the course, this way u get to see the different lines etc that the drivers take etc.
quote: Are there prizes, points, or just bragging rights?
it's all bragging rights. Only event that has prizes is the Corvette Challenge Cup event.
quote: Can more than one driver drive a car, and can one driver drive more than one car?
Yes to the 1st, and i'm not sure about the 2nd. Maybe in the fun runs, but DEFINATELY no in the 3 official runs.
quote: Will there be a concession?
No, bring ur own food, drink etc. At the really big events there might be a concession, but that was at the only 2 day event last year.
c |
|
|
| schlong8 |
oh yah, another point to add.
ASA has a stricter registration. U'll need a valid driver's license, registration and the owner's permission to use the car if u are not the primary registered owner.
the process to register and tech is pretty set down and it makes it easy. U get a sheet, fill it out, get teched, then register and pay, then u get ur number. |

Is the tech inspection more strict than the ECC?
No, I think its pretty much the same. Battery tie down, wheel bearings, tires, all loose junk removed from car. There's probably some other stuff. I don't do tech cuz I'm mechanically inept.
quote:
My helmet's only DOT rated, will that do? (it passed on the 11th)
Nope. Must be Snell rated. I think we are still accepting Snell 90 rating though. There will be a few loaner helmets available, but the more people that have their own, the better.
quote:
Are there classes?
Not for our club events, although there have been some people wanting to have cars classed. It would make it easier to figure out who you *should* be able to beat. But for now, no classes.
The only exception will be our regional event on Aug 10. Cars will be classed for that. Even if you aren't competing in the regional series you should still make sure your car is properly classed, its only fair for the people who are competing. If your car should be in Street prepared and you claim it is stock and then you beat someone who is competing in Stock, they get screwed out of points.
quote:
I'd like to volunteer, if I volunteer does that dq me from running?
Hell no.
quote:
Where would I volunteer?
Well, you will be expected to marshal (i.e. chase cones) when you're not running. If you would like to do more (and we encourage you to) just show up extra early and you can help chalk cones or something. We just had a meeting last week for people who were interested in helping out more. I think the prez is assigning most of the "key" positions ahead of time (tech, registration/timing, course design, etc.) Just talk to someone at the event and let them know you'd like to help out more. They'll probably find you something for the following event.
quote:
Are there prizes, points, or just bragging rights?
No classes, hence no prizes. Lots of bragging though.
If you want some actual competition, complete with classes, points, trophies, etc, you are encouraged to take part in the WCMA regional series. Each club (Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatoon and Winnipeg) hosts one event. Saskatoon actually gets 2. You must compete in 3 events to qualify for trophies. You also have to be a member of a WCMA affiliated club (i.e. ASA) and purchase a WCMA Solo II license. Its $20 for the license and there is no test or anything. Its pretty much just to ensure there is a trophy fund, and it makes us feel like real race car drivers.
quote:
Can more than one driver drive a car, and can one driver drive more than one car?
More than one person can drive one car. Full entry fee for each of course. If you don't own the car you will need written permission from the owner, which shouldn't be a problem if they are the other driver. Just make sure the registration people know you are both driving the same car so that they don't put you too close together in the run order.
I don't think anyone has ever asked to drive more than one car. You certainly can't take up more than one place in the run order (you can't enter twice). I'm not 100% sure on this one but I would say no, unless you had mechanical difficulties with your primary car.
If we have time for fun runs at the end, then any registered driver can run any teched car, with permission of course. As a beginner, it might be a good idea to get an experienced driver to take you car for a run. Then you can see what it is capable of.
quote:
Will there be a concession? :P
No. Bring lunch, water, etc.
quote:
Thats all the q's I really have for now.. but I"m sure my lack of calm will draw more in the future..
Bob

I'm wondering about my helmet here though. It is a brand new AGV, which is an Italian company, but because they only use DOT ratings in Italy since Snell certification isn't up to their DOT standards it is not technically "Snell" approved. Would this be a problem? The testing standards for motorcycle helmets are extremely stringent in Europe since they make up a much larger portion of vehicles driven every day.
Just wondering.....thanks

I don't know a lot about helmets, but I don't think I buy that argument. It sounds like something a salesman told you to get you to buy the helmet even though its not Snell certified. There are other AGV helmets out there that are Snell certified, so why would this one use some "superior" DOT certification and not the others.
I doubt it will pass tech. |

I'd just like to announce that I'll be hosting an open pit. We have a generater, battery charger, basic set of tools, jack, air compressor.. Basic stuff. So yeah, it'll be there if anyone needs to swap wheels or do anything else small... I'll bring a tire repair kit and a few other little nicknacks.. (unless they don't let all my stuff on the base)
It'll be there if anyone needs it.. :)

I really don't know. If its a back one you might be OK.
Its kinda wierd though. Yesterday at work, someones car got broken into in the parkade. The first thing that went through my head was "Great. I'm going to go find a side window smashed in and then I won't be able to get it fixed and I won't be able to run on Sunday."
Later today I'll be talking to some of the guys that know more than me about these things, so I'll try to remember to ask. |
