The ghetto steadycam. It's not exactly perfect, but it is a huge, HUGE improvement over handheld. And the best part ... you can build it yourself for under $20 with parts from the hardware store. A few people have modified them to get different effects, but the principle is the same. Where the pro cams use springs and struts to dampen the motion, here your arm does the work.

He has a few sample vids in the link, but if you hit up Youtube you can see many examples from people.

Apparently going with a system without a side handle helps get rid of the tilting issue this guy has in some of his vids, but then you're carrying the whole weight on one arm.

The modification I noticed working best was having an inverted Y joint at the bottom and using two 2.5lb weights instead of the one 5lb weight.

i'll foresure have to try that

I remember that rig, one local film maker was using one about 13 years ago for a paintball movie being made at Ultimate Adventure downtown.

His was more archaic, but it does the job exceptionally well.

im liking that.! Maybe we could see who can produce the best vid from the meets out of any members wanting to participate.

Charge an entry fee and reward the best voted short film the pool of money and a runner up?

Though if someone had a skateboard and a rope you could have some smooth film too.!
