Does Mental Toughness precede success? - Click HERE for Original Thread

REFLUX
It seems like Mental Toughness is a common characteristic amongst successful individuals.
Whether that toughness is publicly shown or not, it seems to be there with those who excel.

What does mental toughness mean to you?
And do you think it's a necessary characteristic for success?
(whatever the success may be, from athletics to business to research to entertainment)

I think so.

Just look at Arnold Schwarzenegger. He never said to himself he "wanted" to do something. He told himself he "will" do something, and whatever his goals were he accomplished. Just look at the feats that man has accomplished in his life. Pretty damn impressive to me, i'd love to be as mentally strong as him.

Mental is 90% of the battle. I believe that for pretty much anything in life. From making money, to getting a hot gf, to getting the body you want, etc, etc

If not more.

Don't forget the role of opportunity, or the varying definitions of mental toughness and success. For one person "mental toughness" could lead to a successful business career, for another not starving in a third world shantytown. They may both score equally on the mental toughness index but not end up with the same success due to vastly different opportunity.

Then there's the definition on mental toughness. Is a person who runs a successful drilling company mentally tough because he can work hard with his head down 7 days a week? Is this the same quality that is found in a successful ransom negotiator?

I think that being mentally strong, or whatever you call it is very important in finding success in your environment, but that the environment is a limiting (or helping) factor. Kareem Abdul Jabbar would have been a lot less rich and famous if be was born before 1891.

It sure would be nice if we could say that success is based on a single internal quality. Then everyone would be their rightful place.

success i think comes from attitude and confidence. if you lack confidence find it, whether being gym or through friends (communication). Job wise, people that excel have an attitude to get err done..that drive.push

I have no drive or push though without my coffee..emergency kit.
