wow, bodywork sucks! - Click HERE for Original Thread

Anyone here do their own paint and prep work? Im working on a set of bumpers, and the sanding is KILLING ME. Theres purple dust everywhere.
So its taken me a day of work and I have the front bumper in primer now. Damn, and I thought painting the bumpers would be the easier part... I still gotta install them!

But the end result should be interesting, something I doubt anybody has seen around alberta :fingersx:

Did you take pics of the whole process?
It might be nice help for anyone else that is thinking of doing their own work.

dood, welcome to the life of a prepper/bodyman/painter, i work at a body shop, and i have been for the last year, sure its lots of work but it becomes SOO simple. its hard on your lungs/body, but o well, not much you can do!

-I'd take pics but I dont have a digicam... I doubt anyone else is going to be doing this though, I've only seen 1 other car that did the same bumper swap as me.

DJshorty, I was going to do autobody as a trade, but then I realized that I dont like it quite enough to enjoy it everyday :D

But I've ran into a prob. They changed up the crush panels on the 91 year. I have 89 bumpers. Its totaly different. :thefinger: I cant even use the 89's rebar because the mounts to the car are different  So I need to find a dremel or sawzall and start cutting

SuperJay
Is it the SiR bumper?

To whoever posted earlier about fixing dings with dry ice... NIEN!!!! It doesn't work, I tried it for 20 min, no results, what a waste of time.

You're supposed to let the body panel heatup by leaving it in the sun. THEN use the dry ice. Apparently, you're supposed to circle the bump so that the sheetmetal around the dent contracts and pulls out the dent. But what the hell do I know? ;) :(

can't wait to see that all painted up.. is there any spot to mount your front signals?

TrevorK
Yup - I do all my own body work/paint and it's the dirtiest job I've ever done. It's challenging to make sure it's done right the first time (Like not forgetting dents, etc...).

The only shitty part is the filter I use for breathing while I paint isn't too good, so needless to say I cough up stuff pretty damn nasty after I paint a car. Plus I don't have any circulation, so I'm just waiting to walk out of my garage one day as high as a kite off the fumes.

BLK_LBL
Well its all done, after about an hour and a half of cutting at the crush panel. Now I just need to get it painted, and then I can start on the rear bumper
ahh it never ends

Jockette
hand sanding sux..............

djshortys
bondo works fun.....

Jockette
couldn't find the sanding blocks one day, so it was trying to grip the sandpaper and sand at the same time, not cool....

Senad
hahah, Try doing it everyday as a job. At least you are doing it to your own vehicle and not some F-150 covered in dirt.

BLK_LBL
Senad, looks like you make a good living doin it though (judging by the car)
mmmmm, evo's
