it should be possible to do this, well as long as the exchange server is publically accessible. I will see what I can come up with for you as to exactly how to set it up

It can be done, yes. Your exchange needs to be configured to allow POP3 and SMTP unless your phone can handle Exchange protocols. Which method do you want to use?

the options i seem to have are POP3 and IMAP4, im trying pop3 right now

edit: what would i put for incoming mail and outgoing and do i use a domain?

Incoming mail is the POP3 server eg. pop3.telus.net
Outgoing mail is the SMTP server eg. smtp.telus.net

You will need this information from your provider. If the exchange server does not have these protocols running you will not be able to configure your mail client unless you have an application like Outlook which is tightly integrated with the Exchange server protocol but this most likely will not work because you will be attempting to access the Exchange server outside of its network on a PDA. So, you'll need your POP3 server, SMTP server, username and password.

Assuming you are able to get this far, you will find you will have trouble sending outgoing mail from time to time depending on where you are as most ISPs block SMTP traffic as anti-spam tactics and force you to use their SMTP server. eg. On Telus, you can only use smtp.telus.net to send outgoing mail, you cannot access smtp.yourcompany.com.

Is the HX4700 using Exchange Activesync by default? If so, Exchange 2003 has built-in support so that a VPN connection isn't needed.

I would recommend talking to your Exchange admin, they should know off the top of their heads whether they are allowing this to happen.

I did this today only for Palms. It was cake actually.

You bet it is - I have ours setup so all the user needs to add in is our domain name. It can be done fairly easy, provided the Exchange admin is permitting it.

Just don't tell anyone - I like being known around here as barely proficient in Windows XP ;)

I can see a server waiting to be built from where I'm sitting right now, and I'm glad I'll have no part in it.

I'd rather be building than fixing. I'd give my left nut for your job. Not your Service Desk job, I mean the other one. Working with clusters is fun. Especially seeing as I was a math guy. We used to cluster Big Blues at UofM and crunch stuff that took 8 hours on 1 supercomputer in about 15 minutes.

The nice thing about comp sci if you're working in a job a comp sci really should be is the variety. You code, you develop job-specific software and drivers, you do complex math to find out how efficient you are and do it better, etc. The problem is.....there's like.....100 jobs like that in all of Canada, and they're all being done by 100 Ph.D. students.

sorry for the lack of response, i've been trying to persuade my server admin to allow me to do this, he said it was very eazy to do but the head office dosent like the potential for sensitive documents to be out in the open, incase i misplace the pda or it gets stolen. They also argue that since im just a tech i dont need access to the email servers 24/7 thank you very much for the input though, it will come in handy in the near future

Weird. Is mobile access enabled on the exchange server? It's also perfectly secure. The only hard part is getting your port-forwarding on your router to work.
