"Your driving this thing like if it was a sports car." "I shoulda got you a 4 cylinder."

The problem is that you're nervous around your dad because of your intense desire to seek his approval.

The only way to change this is to start by convincing yourself that you don't need his approval, that what matters is what you think on the subject. His opinion will be taken into consideration, but not treated as gospel as you are more than capable of making your own decisions.

Of course, this is much easier said than done. However, settling into a mindset where you aren't focussed on pleasing people will allow you to enjoy life more.

If you need to practice then take drivers ed, it will lower your insurance and you won't know the person you are driving with. Should not have a "pleasing that person" problem.

QFT.

My dad was an extemely good driver, and an extremely lousy driving instructor. I took a Driving Course from AMA in high school and it was just the ticket for getting real driving tips and getting my dad off my back. In those days we got credit for 2 or 3 years worth of driving experience when we went for insurance after taking a driver's course. It paid for itself that way.
