I can recommend a codec. www.archlinux.org

Seriously though, look for quicktime alternative. Should play 'em just fine.

ImporTuner
http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/
download DIVX and install the software then run your video file with windows media player and it should work fine.

slinky
VLC MEDIA PLAYER.

www.videolan.org will play everything but RATDVD

MP4 is usually another name for AAC: advanced audio codec. It was designed by Apple and since its so popular (because of iTunes) it's found in many of those codec packs above.

Actually, it's a container, it can contain a million different types of files. It's not another name for anything.

Ah, yes... my mistake. I was thinking of M4A. It was still designed by Apple, wasn't it?

Yes. Which is why I suggested quicktime alternative. MP4 usually contains AAC as you mentioned for audio (which quicktime alternative will let you play through Windows Media) and MPEG-4 for Video (mp4 being short for MPEG-4 layer 14). I say usually because there are much better containers than MP4 so most people don't use it, but it's what Apple decided to create/use for iPod videos. DIVX and XVID work much better in AVI containers or their own containers, so you don't usually find them in MP4's. You'll find apple using m4a, m4b, m4p, and m4v, which is technically incorrect since m4v should be reserved for MPEG-4 Visual not MPEG-4 Layer 14. Nonetheless, anytime you have a mp4 or m4* file that isn't playing, the quick and dirty is to install either quicktime or quicktime alternative. If that fails, break out the old VLC. If you're like me and hate VLC, fall back to some program that will scan the file and tell you which codecs are actually required to decode the data stored inside the container.

I'm not a big fan of VLC unless I'm in Linux. My personal favorite is Windows Media Player Classic, with a bunch of special decoders and other codec management things... I love forcing Dolby Digital through PCM on my sound card that 'isn't suppose to support it'.

heheh
