Can I hide my registration and ins.? - Click HERE for Original Thread

little_one_der
Well, I never really thought about it until now. In my convertible for instance, a locked glove box or center console isn't much of a wall between would be thieves, so I was wondering if it's legal to hide the registration and insurance papers somewhere on the car, but not necessarily within arms reach...

Like, let's say, under the carpet behind the pass seat... or behind the dash, or something to that effect.

In case...........someone steals your proof of insurance?

It's not quite illegal, but you have to be able to get it to an officer when he asks. Your call whether you want to take time to get it out or not.

For the record, some cops might be annoyed by the delay...which may influence your chances of getting off without a ticket.

Or wonder what else you have hidden.;)

little_one_der
Well I don't have anything else hidden...

I would take it out of the car, it's just really inconvenient to search the home for it every time I want to take off.

my brother used to hide his under his driver side floor mat. nothign wrong with that. I personally take all my info inside after i am done driving. its retarded imo to keep it in the car.

If a theif gets pulled over and finds it he can get away with a no license ticket if the vehicle is not called in yet. that means if its stolen in the middle of the night and your sound asleep and he gets pulled over, he can just give the info and get away with nothing. The ticket would be given to you the victim.

If the theif doesn't have the papers and he gets pulled over its an arrest. Personally if i have my car stolen while i am sleeping i would be happier knowing the theif could potentially be fucked over hard if a cop decides to pull him over for no reason. this typically happens if your in a nice car at 4 am driving.

I know it has happened to me several times for absolutely no reason. Every time it has just been to make sure i own the car, and i respect eps for pulling me over and making sure it's mine. It makes me feel better about if my car ever gets stolen, that there is a chance it will be returned.

little_one_der
'Tis a very good argument.

Well, I think I'll go pull my papers out of the car...

Edit: Ohh, is it illegal to have another vehicles registration (still in my name) on hand while in another vehicle.

For instance; the plastic holder thingy for insurance and reg., let's say I stick both registrations in the one holder so it's with me all the time.

So the holder has Car A's registration and Car B's registration at all times. Plus applicable insurance papers.

Prudz_lude
that is completely legal as well. You just can't have two licenses.

How could someone get away with driving a car without a licence?

Prudz_lude
By nothing i meant not being arrested on the spot for having no proof of ownership or insurance. The theif would get a ticket for no license, but he would get away scott free in comparison. I knew a few people that used to steal cars and i have heard many stories about how they got out of everything simply by handing over the owners registration and insurance. The cops can't prove its not them and the ticket was given to the actual owners of the cars. Understand?

That doesn't make any sense. If someone doesn't have a licence.. the car will be impounded. I'm sure the cop would have some questions for the person driving the car.. and they would probably phone the registered owner and ask if the person has permission to be driving it.

Explain your last sentence to me again.

Prudz_lude
Ok i see what your not getting. You do NOT get your car impounded for no license. Its just a ticket. That is all, just a ticket. That is why if your a theif you can get away with it. You hand over the insurance papers and the registration for the car and the cop can't really do anything besides give you that ticket. If he wanted to he could call the owner and try and call the theifs bluff but i can already tell you that, that's not always the case.

i keep my insurance and registration papers in my wallet since i don't have a glove box or much storage space inside.

plus, if someone broke into my car they wouldn't get any of my info.

You do have a glove box, it's just placed between you and the passenger! :p

Actually, a police officer can tow a vehicle if the driver does not have a valid driver's license as well as ticket him. Since ownership of the vehicle cannot be proven and the registered owner can not be contacted, a police officer could impound the car for safe-keeping. Prudz, I'm not sure where you are getting your information from because your sources are full of it.

Also, if someone is issued a ticket, they are obligated to identify themselves to the peace officer otherwise they could be charged criminally with obstruction. A ticket for driving with no license would go to the person, not the registered owner of the vehicle. Prudz, I'd check your sources for information before you give out more advice.

Prudz_lude
You are right as well. its the descrestion of the officer that will determine if that individual is fucked or going to be let on their way. If i was an officer and pulled a sketchy looking guy over at 4 am and he didn't have a liscense i would arrest the guy. however, if i felt he didn't have his license and he was telling the truth i would let him go (assuming he's not bugging out and looks like he's tripping off drugs, and its believeable that its his car)

I am talking from a personal experience when it comes to not having a license to give an officer. I got a nice big ticket. All i gave was insurance papers and my registration and i was told i could leave. this was at 2 am in an empty neighbour hood.

Yea.. as i was saying.

Prudz_lude
exactly, I never said what you said was completely wrong. What i said was there are exceptions and theives could still get away with not having a license. I mean, the cop let me go and honestly he had no way to prove i owned the vehicle. descretion is the key, and because descretion is all that is left i prefer to feel safer about my car being stolen by keeping my papers on me at all times when i am not in the car.
