bc-alberta demerits - Click HERE for Original Thread

Do demerits from other provinces carry over to alberta? I am going to bc on the long weekend and knowing the amount of police I am bound to get a speeding ticket when I go to pass that camper that goes 60 all the way until he hits the passing lane then goes 90.

Yes, they do.

Ayeso
huh, thats odd, I got a speeding ticket in alberta when I lived in bc and it did not effect me in bc. I think it only carries over if you xfer your license to the province.

mparns
thanks! i will really watch it then

Are you sure that demerits are transferable between provinces? As far as I know, anything related to traffic licensing, registrations, and enforcement is all provincially regulated, and therefore demerits can only be applied to persons holding active licenses within that same area. This obviously does not hold true about fines, because those can go to collections (or lately, Revenue Canada).

When you move, they follow you. That is proof right there that they are transferrable. Good driving is also transferrable (except to Manitoba where you start at 0 merits regardless) for provinces who use a merit system.

If you change insurance providers, when they ask about any driving violations, you'd technically be committing fraud if you failed to notify them of your OOP driving infractions. Then when you move from Alberta, you'd be required to divulge all infractions in the past 5 years whether they were Alberta or somewhere else.

The exception to this rule is out-of-country violations which you are not required to divulge.

Ah, thanks for the clarification, dt. I stand corrected. However, I still fail to see how demerit sharing can be done efficiently unless both provinces follow the same schedule on number of demerits awarded depending on the offence.

i think hes asking about going on a trip

like if he is registered/insured/from alberta and he is on a trip in bc and gets pulled over, he does not get demerits correct?

Not in the sense that if he's 2 demerits shy of a suspension and gets a ticket worth 2 demerits in BC he'll get a letter to discuss his suspension. But he will have that violation on his record, and if the government or insurance companies ever look up his record in BC, he will get those demerits added on. I don't know when the AB government looks up other provinces, but if/when they do, they have full legal right to add those demerits at that time.

dtjohnst, how did you know that was my current situation?

True. I just wanted to see if I could make you paranoid with that last one. ;) Really, I just gave an example, I have no idea what category you fit into.
