I have been told that when you buy a new car you have two weeks to swap over the insurance and regisration. All I need to do is keep a valid plate on my new car (off my truck) and keep the bill of sale in my insurance booklet (in the new car) and all will be ok? I am only gonna drive it a short ways to my parents place to park my new car:D if anyone can confirm this it will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks |

You have to swap your insurance over ASAP. Or at least have just bought it, called your insurance broker gave them the info and be driving it during your brokers hours so they can confirm you do have insurance(since you wouldn't have a pink card to prove it, even then they could stillw rite you a ticket for failing to provide proof of insurance.
Plate... Yes once you have insurance on the new vehicle you can use the "current" as in fully registered plate from your old vehicle... slight catch with this.. for it to be legal you need to no longer own the first car.. so say you have car A.. you go to a dealership, trade in car A on car b.. you can use car A's plate for a 14day grace period.
Now if you own car A.. take a bus and go buy car B, but car A is still sitting at home and your going to use the plate from car A to get car B home, that's illegal... most cops prolly won't care.. but you could still get a ticket or two. |

Hmm I can't even find the spot in the TSA that says you have 2 weeks.
TSA states:
quote:
52(1) Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall not do any of the following:
(a) operate a motor vehicle or trailer on a highway unless there is a subsisting certificate of registration issued in respect of that vehicle;
(h) unless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle,
(i) apply for the registration of a motor vehicle, or
(ii) obtain the registration of a motor vehicle.
quote:
Licence plates
53(1) Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall not do any of the following:
(a) operate or park a motor vehicle or trailer on a highway unless the subsisting licence plate issued for that vehicle or that is otherwise permitted under this Act is displayed on that vehicle in accordance with the regulations;
(b) display on a motor vehicle or trailer a licence plate other than a licence plate issued or authorized for use on that vehicle;
(c) operate or park a motor vehicle or trailer on a highway with an expired licence plate displayed on it;
(d) permit any licence plate issued to that person to be used in contravention of this Act.
On the insurance side:
quote:
Insurance required
54(1) Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall not do any of the following:
(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
I can't find the 2week exemption yet..

I had an officer pull me over the second day after I bought my 7, because the plates didn't match the registration. I left my Bill of Sale at home, but he let me go. I was told that you had 14 days to switch over the registration, as long as you didn't own the other vehicle, and to make sure that I had a bill of sale next time (He was a very nice and friendly officer).
My insurance company at the time also had a 14 day transfer policy, but they did strongly advise to get the temporary faxed to me as soon as possible, to avoid confusion with the police. |

| ^That is exactly what my dad said. He said that with the bill of sale I should be fine. I am only planning on driving the car to my parents farm one way so I should be safe:dunno: I dont really want to go through the hassle of switchin it all for driving a couple of kms. |

| Double-check with your insurance company before you move anything. My example was for one company that allowed the transfer of insurance like that. Many companies will be different. |
