So I'm burning oil, as some now, and every single shop I took it to tried to convince me to just swap my engine for a JDM. "84,000 miles, great shape, I put it in for you, $2500, work good, no problem. Rebuild maybe $4000." Then when I asked if they had a licenced mechanic on staff, the answer was "no".
So I swing by JD Car Care (149th St at about 114th), little hole in the wall shop, everyone there is mechanic, and I ask them about a diagnosis. $166 and 2 hours later they've narrowed down the location of the problem and fed my oil and gas some additives to hopefully fix the issue and avoid a rebuild. Compression test done, leak down test down, visual inspection of major components to check for leaks.
But naturally, alternatives were discussed. $2000-2600 on average for an engine rebuild, another $500-600 to do all the hard stuff that I might as well get done while the engine is out: clutch, timing belt, etc. And the best part is, if it gets fucked up, their mechanics are licenced and insured so I can get compensated. But having spoken to them, I have no concern at all that they'll do it right if a rebuild is needed.
Highly recommended for good prices and good guys with licences, especially if, like me, you like to walk into a shop and see guys who don't look like they're 16 working on cars. Wide variety of cars in there too: trucks, vettes, camaros, imports, they do it all.
EDIT:
PS. I mean no offence to the sponsors here who have licenced mechanics. I realize JD isn't the ONLY place with them. Subracing was going to be my next stop but I got such a good vibe from these guys I figured what's the point. |

| sweet pm how everything goes with your lude. I have been looking for a good shop to take my lude on a regular basis and so far caliber (i think thats the name) automotive is the only place that is fair in their prices and know what they are doing. It would be nice to have another trusted place to go to with my lude. for hopefully finding another. |

JD is a good place - the owners are honest mechanics who provide honest service.
They won't build a custom turbo kit for your Prelude, but they'll gladly discuss options that most "normal" people do. I've seen everything from Vette's to huge motorhomes being worked on in there. |
