Seized Bolts - Click HERE for Original Thread

Schramm
The rear lca's bolts are siezed on my 95 civic. I know how you guys at the shop do it, but im in my garage and dont have the specialized tools, any special tricks? help appreciated, otherwise i have to hack my strut apart :S

doanster
Maybe try using Nuts Off spray?

Schramm
like those penetrating oil sprays? ya i was using 3in1 penetrating oil, even let it soak over night... nothing

STiPWR
a big ass snipe.

kouki240
Rost off plus some major leverage should do the trick.

ehos
Use a real penetrating oil like Kroil.

Careful with the leverage, you'll probably break off the nuts on the Civic (cheap bolts everywhere). Did you tap the bolts lightly with a hammer?

Heat?

You probably don't have a compressor or I would suggest an good impact gun.

JeepGirl
Rost off + heat+snipe+Rost off+heat+snipe. Wash, rinse repeat..

Thats how I got the seized lower rear shock bolts out of my 3G civic and they had been on there since the car was built... IN 1984!!

Ayeso
Yeah very common problem in hondas stupid metal on metal :( sometimes its actually reust welded on. Most the time I just cut it off and replace the lca instead of fighting with it but alot of the time u can use impact+heat+rust buster crap

Schramm
is a snipe a type of impact gun?

haha and the leverage did break the nuts off.....
now i have to go cut my stock suspension outta there
and spent an extra $40 on bushings and bolts...

dealerships are so expensive

Yup, the more leverage you use, the more careful you have to be. If I HAVE to use a snipe (big long breaker bar, basically you put something over your wrench/ratchet to increase it's length), use it veeeery carefully and slowly.

Oh yeah, this time use anti-sieze on your nice new bolts!!

Schramm
and wouldn't a heating gun destroy a bushing? since they're rubber?

mines 60C/140F..

haha too late most of my bolts are back in :S shit
owell

When I replaced the LCA's on my Civic, I had to burn out the bushing and cut the bolts in half. They were COMPLETELY seized and not moving at all. I was replacing the stock ones with aftermarket units, so I didn't care about the stock LCA's.

Schramm
oh and where can i find kroil? or PB Blaster, or PEN Fluid 2000?

ChromeDragon
Get a lot of heat into the nut/bolt first and then hit it with the penetrating lube. It should get pulled into the threads that way. I've managed to break 50-year-old bolts loose quite easily with this method.

Schramm
okay now what about the bushings?
i tried the same things, i even used a heating torch, that burnt it tho (im not using that one anymore) so when i hammered again it knocked the middle out.
so heres my dilemma:
17 year old car, one full bushing stuck, and a outer bushing ring stuck.
please help i need this car done

EK9Hatch
Do you have a tiger saw? (its just a electric saw that cuts back and forth) If so, just cut the bolt out, then hammer. The LCA should drop right out.

Jamie

Schramm
im not looking to remove the LCA just the bushing for the strut eyelet. and one of the burned out when i tried torching it lol i know it was dumb but you learn from your mistakes right?

ChromeDragon
Just a good excuse to stick in new polyurethane bushings!

Schramm
but how do i get the old ones out?

Schramm
bump. seriously i need these things out im running out of time :S.

what i have now is the middle of the bushing is out, but the outer ring is stuck in there.
i've tried heating it, pb blasting it, i cut it in a few places with a hacksaw to see if pieces would come loose, i've hammered and chiseled, and now im using a die grinder to grind it down to size, but its taking forever, not really a good method.

plz help
