Cheap Engine Upgrades For D16Y8 - Click HERE for Original Thread

Odey
I got a 1998 Honda Civic Si with the stock D16Y8 engine in it, and im looking to add some horsepower but dont want to spend a whole lot of money. Just looking for some suggestions because i dont know alot about engines, audio is more my area.

Thanks

Home made turbo set up. It's the ONLY way to get good Power for fairly cheap...don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

You can put a home made turbo kit together usually for under $1,500. With some tuning and knowledge, you could get 175-200 WHP out of the D16Y8 on stock internals.

In all honesty, if you can't afford a turbo set up, don't bother with other "cheap" mods. Adding a CAI, Header and Exhaust is just a waste of money. With ALL of those mods, you might get 10-15 HP and thats being generous. And guess what? You will still be extremely slow.

If you want to find out more info about your engine and SOHC Honda's in general, check out www.d-series.org

I agree with jamie on this one. We did a junkyard turbo setup for 400 dollars on one of those... you are looking around 2000-3000 for a nicer setup

Odey
yeah i didnt really want to spend over a grand, so i thought someone would have an idea

Prudz_lude
no other way on those engines to get that power. Turbo or go home!!

EK9Hatch
Well I guess you could buy a Nitrous kit. You can instantly give that motor a 50 or 75 HP shot pretty safely and you can pick up a complete used kit for under $500.

The only problem with Nitrous, is just that...its Nitrous. Its a compressed gas, which means you need to keep re-filling the tank. At $75-$100 a tank, it turns into a pretty expensive mod!

Lococoin
toss in a b20 or a b18b. i dont know if it could be done under 1000 though, maybe if you found the right deal. Other than that or a turbo dont bother wasting your money. Put that 1000 in the bank and keep saving for either a turbo kit, engine swap or a different car.

Prudz_lude
nitrous would destroy the weak trannys in those cars.

D16Y8 Actually has quite a good tranny. It can handle Nitrous and Turbos pretty well. The only weak link would be the clutch, which is the same problem when adding power to any car.

Jamie

Prudz_lude
hmmm didn't realize that. You would think a transmission built for 90whp would only handle that and a little more. Ohh well good to know. My friend might turbo in the near future, or a k swap :D

EK9Hatch
With a aftermarket performance clutch, D16Y8 Trannys can handle over 200 WHP easily.

yeah my buddy has a brand new clutch and flywheel that im buying off of him here pretty soon

JeepGirl
Boost it, it's the only way.

The way these engines are designed is only for great gas mileage, not speed and power. They did this by making the head very restrictive which means very little air and gas can be fed through the system Naturally Aspirated. To remedy this, you have to either spend lots of money to do I/H/E, PnP, Cam regrind, port matching... or you hang a turbo off the exhaust manifold and force as much air as can be safely crammed into the engine.

I'm doing a bit of both, on an even smaller/less tuned engine then you're working on.

Oh, get a good clutch. I can't say enough about having a good clutch in you're car. But I will anyway....

I had an 84 civic hatch with a 68HP 1.3L engine, totally gutless and witht he stock clutch I could hardly get what little HP I did have to the ground. Then I swapped the clutch for a nice shiny new stage2 ceterforce clutch and a new flywheel, the difference was night and day. I could actually break traction through 3 gears whereas I couldn't with the stock clutch.

There's my take on it... More air and fuel = more power + good clutch to reliably get the power to the ground.

Prudz_lude
its the flywheel that is letting you break traction if that is true. I can't see it happening in 3rd with 70bhp  2nd is even hard to believe but maybe you rev the crap out of it to get that. I can't wait to test out my new 12lb flywheel. Should be a blast and a half

gfk.
electirc super charger. hahahahahahahaaaaaaaa:thumbup:

He's quite right. D series are cheap motors with many different turbo kits to choose from. And since turbos make fat torque, something a D series loves to have, you'll be smiling all day.

Start with the home brew turbo kit and then do other mods. Most mods that increase flow (CAI, header, exhaust) pump up your performance more so on a higher flowing engine than one that doesn't pump as much.

But a bad clutch smells so gooooooodddddd... :P You know the engine power is going straight to making funny smells to get you high.

Hey, I want a turo setup for 400, I don't care if it's clean, I just want to have some fun for a while, anyone wanna help with this, PM me...400 is the limit, can it be done? Hopefully, I want a little more torque, and a few more horses...

EK9Hatch
Your not gonna get much for $400. I doubt you can put one together for that price. You would need some hook ups with some free parts, etc for that price.

Even with a junkyard turbo kit, I would say to budget for $800-$1,000

Jamie

Ayeso
we did a junkyard for 400 with a nice intercooler too :D

95civicguy
Did you get any hook-ups or anything? 400 sounded cheap, but when I heard it could be done, I had a little hope. I really want a turbo set up, but nothing huge...oh well, school first, fast car later...:-(
