staggered rim questions - Click HERE for Original Thread

Kiddo
I'm looking for constructive replies.

I find it hard to keep any vehicle stock whether its my daily driver or weekend cruiser, now I feel like getting a set of new shoes for the jetta, I've already done some googling and many people on other forums say its alright to do a staggered set up on a FWD car all it does is cause a little bit of under steer. is that the only problem staggered set ups will do on a FWD car? I personally just want to get a nice set of wheels with a pretty deep dish, the car is a daily driver after all and its not like i race or anything I just want the pimp factor that comes with wide rims and tires. right now I'm looking at a set of Tork Imagine 18x8 in front and 18x8 or 18x8.5 or 18x9 in the rear

Well I've only done it on a Toyota, Suzuki , and a Neon... but it was fine. I found the car handled much better..can't do a 4 wheel tire rotation though.

I've had people tell me it was hard on this and hard on that.. like the tranny or the transaxle case thing(sorry can't remember the proper name right now), or hard onthe suspension..

But I experianced no such problems.

Staggered is expensice, since (like SilverNeonRacer said) you can't rotate your tires.

Hopefully your alignment gives you good tire wear; I know mine doesn't.

Kiddo
if your alignment is off is it possible to reset it or set it right with a kit or something like that?

SilverNeonRacer
Depends on the car, My neon gave good, even wear, but my fifth, although rwd, doesn't on the front because of how the suspension is....
Onthe Neon the tires were lik this |---| and compressed kinda like this |__|
My fifth normal is |---| and compressed /___\ well thats exagerated, but the inner edge of my front tires wear faster due to it. And it's just how the suspension works... not an alignment problem.

Not meaning to hijack but....

When I had my NSX I had the dealer dial the toe out back to what a normal car would be. The factory settings on the NSX's are extremely aggressive. I burned 30% off a set of Yokohama A100's bringing the car back from Vancouver. 1st stop when I got back was a stop at the dealer for a thermostat change and an alignment while they were at it.

Staggered set ups look awesome but as said earler you may only be able to swap from side to side..not front to back.

Any alignment shop can adjust the front alignment or "toe" on a car with the tie rods. Camber is another story and usually required a new upper a-arm in the front or a new adjustable lower bar on the rears for FWD cars.

Yeah, the 6 degrees of toe certainly burns up the tires pretty good, doesn't it?

Makes for good handling though!
