At work there is one person who seems to be a 'sniper' i.e. always saying stuff behind people's back or making an unexpected attack or insult. How do you deal with such people? There seems to be no motive for their behaviour yet they act like they hate or are trying to put you or others down.
How would you deal with a rude co-worker? |

I would put that person in their place and call them out in front of a bunch of co-workers, make them look like an ass.
If that doesn't work, I would take it to management. |

Talk to management first if you aren't already above them.
You could also try talking directly to them first but they'd probably just see that as "material" to use against you.
Usually if people have dumbass things to say, I just look at them with an unimpressed expression (i.e. no expression at all), look away and continue doing what I was doing.
With people like that, what you do NOT want to do is give them any attention.
Their actions are purely attention seeking, whether it be positive or negative.
So, IMO, the best thing is to simply ignore them totally.
If they're jabbing you in the back, the people who hear this "news" will identify themselves as to whether or not they are your friends.
If they believe the BS, then you're better off without people like that around you.
If they back stab other people to you, just play devil's advocate and bring out probably scenarios that will support the victim.
This way you aren't pissing off this gossiper so they won't make more difficulties for you and you're telling this person that you don't necessarily agree with what they're saying/gossiping about.
If that doesn't work, then just tell them straight out, "Yea I'm not sure about that but I'd rather just mind my own business and leave others be."
Sometimes it really depends on the extent of their jabs and insults, if they're more rude and direct, then your approach may be different. |

What type of work place is this? If its a contruction job, you could have a nail gun (or something similar) just "go off" at them.
Joking aside, talk to your human resorce manager, inform them what is going on. This is herassment in the work place and most companies won't tolerate shit like that. The shit disturber will either be written up or fired. If they are written up hopefully that will show them the error in their ways. If it continues they will be fired. |

I had a real problem with the manager I was working under at my last job. She would back stab the boss, take off for 2 hour lunches, never bothered training me... kind of handy to know who our suppliers are when I'm working the phones...
Anyway, she was really rude and crude with me even though I had been so sweet and kind it hurt. She was really brutal with the tech guys in the back too. Swearing at them in front of customers, screaming at the delivery drivers etc
I talked to her about it directly about it and she said "If you don't like it go somewhere else" Well, I liked the job and I didn't want to go elsewhere, so I took it to the owner. He didn't believe me but said that it would explain why he couldn't keep staff. So he said "just take notes of things she does that you find questionable and tell me about it on the down low"
So I took my little digital personal recorder to work and recorded the shit she was saying on the phone to her friends, her bitching out paying customers on the phone, her being foul mouthed with the mailman then finally she got on my case and I recorded that too.
Then when the boss came into the shop just before close, I had enough of her shit and right when the 3 of us were together in the office I played back all the crap I recorded.
Then I said "No one deserves this treatment, I quit" and walked out.
When I got my ROE 2 weeks later she said I had been fired...
 :asshole:

Do your job to the best of your abilities and don't get involved in petty games. Why let something someone says bother you?
I handle it by letting the person know I don't appreciate it, and if they choose to continue they choose to continue, that's out of my control. But I don't let it phase me, I just do my job as need be because in the end, everyone knows who the shit disturber is and it'll eventually come out. If you start whining, you are then taking the focus off the shit disturber and onto you, the whiner.
By whining to your supervisor you will give them the impression that you don't play well with others. In a professional environment, the person committing the "harrassment" will just get a talking to (And no, they won't get written up typically unless it's sexual in nature) and the two of you will be then told to develop a plan to improve your communication.
Going to HR is just opening a whole other can of worms. Your supervisor (and their supervisor) won't appreciate going over their head with these issues. |

Hi Colossus,
I would just confront them and ask them what their deal is. If they have a deal and can own up to it they will tell you. If not, then by confronting them gives you the control position and sends the message you are not to be messed with. You might be uncomfortable with the idea at first, but once you do it, you feel more incontrol.
If you run to management right away you risk looking like a whiner, and may give them more reason to talk behind your back.
Louis also has it right too. I would fire them.

Tell him you think he's sexy and you want to suck his cock.
One of 2 things will happen:
1) he'll be so scared of you he'll never say shit about you again
2) He'll complain about sexual harassment and they can finally terminate his ass for grounds of making frivolous complaints.
Works great. |

I would have no reservations against confronting someone, if I wish to take that route, but usually I will place my control over them by playing their games with false information. Those kinds of people are often easily controlled.
With the really smart ones however, you may have to take the higher road and um.. steal their identity and slowly ruin their life. ;) |

I'd shoot 'em.
Kidding.
Honestly, if someone's being a jackass, I just try and piss 'em off. It's fun to watch.
Our trucks have switches under the hood to open the doors from the outside, so if all the doors are closed, you need to flip the hood open and pull one of the switches.
One guy was pissing me off, so I took his truck, a 15-ton airbrake version. and paked it right up against the wall so you couldn't open the hood. Got out, closed the door, and walked away. Haha, that truck didn't move for a week! The finally dragged it, but it took 'em a while to figure out what to do. |

1-2hr's before home time on a Friday " Hey how goes the battle? ...say I got Q for you I over heard your name mentioned and that you would be leaving us soon is that true? ...ohh your not hmmmm well that's weird why would they say that then"
And drop the conversation right there don't even mention FIRED just the suggestion of it or something like it is enough for the imagination to get rolling and they spend all weekend stressed out about it and there's a off chance they will quit within a week or so if you do it right (Depending on situation) they will gear up to to quit on there own.
Can require a bit of a poker face but if you keep it short and sweet it's a nice way to mess with an assholes head, I use to do this to retard sales men all the time and to lower managers and sometimes they would go off in a storm to the big bosses office and get themselves fired for flipping out...lol that just gave me the giggles.
If anything it breaks down to Positive and negative people the power of positive thinking is cheesy but it work's, stay in a good attitude at work no matter what and if office gossip finds you and it's negative tell it fuck off with a happy cheerful voice! |

If its really that bad I fire them, here's some examples
When talking to a group of staff members ask whoever still works here put up your hand, then whoever you want gone look at and say Bob you might want to put your hand down. Then pull them into the office and make it official.
Randomly call the person over one day and be like, oh I was really hoping you would stand on that tile now I am going to have to fire you. Oh well I guess this will be your last day.
I thought of this one last night,
I have a buddy that works at a radio station so he can make voiceovers that sound like live radio. I'd have him make one on a cd and play it in the store. It would pretty much go like this; "I was talking to a buddy yesterday that doesn't like firing his staff I thought I would help him out. He works at M&M's and would like to say this to his staff member." (This is were I would come on and say) "You know John You have been with us for six months now and I just don't think it is working out if you would pack up your stuff and leave right now it would save me from calling you into my office at 6:00 and having to let you go." Hey if it work it would stop my search for a reason to let him go besides the reason that I hate his guts. |
