Oilers sign souray, good or bad? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Dustin99
So the Oilers sign Sheldon Souray , what's your thoughts and oponions?

ChromeDragon
Two puck-moving defencemen? I guess it's not a bad thing. We should have a pretty solid point with him back there on the power play.

Dustin99
I do agree! We do need some solid defence, the terms weren't released yet i just hope we didn't make a stupid deal money-wise!

ptemomo
mmmmm as i Montreal fan who watch every one of their game , here is my opinion. He's gonna score a lot of goal on PP. But he cant move the puck at all, contrary with whats stated higher. He makes stupid decision with the puck. And cant really play defense to save is life. Do i want him on my team? Sure. At 27 millions for 5 years? No friggin way. But i guess the oilers have to calm their fans one way or another.... He might help, but he's no Pronger.

ChromeDragon
Obviously he's no Pronger, but team up him and Pitkanen on the line and I think they'll put some pucks in the net.

Montreal just sucked so it made Souray's mistakes even more obvious. hehe j/k

I think his season in 2006-07 was an anomaly. I don't think he'll break 60 points again, but he should be good for a solid 40-50 for the next few years.

I think there are better defencemen out there for the money he's getting paid (Biggest example is Lubo's extension in LA), however the Oilers have excess cap room and a hard time attracting free agents as it is.

Provided that Souray's $5.4 million salary doesn't get in the way of signing any UFAs/RFAs that come along I would say it's a solid move. He may be overpaid, but he's going to help the team more than any other defenseman left in the UFA market.

Plus, let's face it. Souray can most likely be dealt for a minimum first round pick in next years draft (I'd say he'd get much more) at the deadline. And it may be worth it for the Oil to step back, and attempt to build their team through the draft with the upcoming draft being the deepest in many years.

Souray isn't going to be the difference between making the playoffs or not this season (Unless big changes occur shortly). With many of the Western conference teams improving over the off-season I don't think the Oilers should be counting on making the playoffs without a lot of luck.

As a Montreal fan I am disappointed. Gainey overpaid to get Hamrlik and that meant the end for Souray. He should definitely give Edmonton's PP a boost with his big shots on the point. That being said he is definitely not a puck moving defenceman and has a tendancy to get beat one on one. I am sure everyone remembers what Spezza did to him.

Is it an upgrade over our defense from last year? Damn right!

I think this is a great addition to our team! :) Look forward to seeing him in action.

Another bonus is he's physical, something we were missing since Smith's Departure.

One thing to remember about +/- is that it's a even strength stat, and a majority of sheldon's points were produced on the power play.

I would have to say im happy we got him. I dont know to many player that want to play for edmonton right now. Escpailly after their stint last year. For 5.4 million i think its a good deal for us. I wouldnt want to play here if i had a choice to play somewhere else. We are gonna royally suck this year. We wont make the playoffs again and its just gonna piss me off. I figure we end up 10th in the west.

He will be a great addition to our team but the rest of the team needs to pull their socks up and get their shit together. Last year was just embarassing.

Now we need an enforcer to keep our players from being injured... Getting rid lf Laraque was a huge mistake...

Fuck that. This isn't the '80s, most players can take care of themselves now. The Oilers don't have any prima-donnas, any one of them would drop the gloves if need be.

Guess you didn't watch last season.

This will only be possible after the first three seasons of the contract. He has a no-trade clause written into the deal.

I do think, however, that he will be a great addition to the Oil...he did have 11 more points than the two leading scorers on the team last year (Sykora, Hemsky), and more goal and points than the entire D-corps...just get him the puck on the powerplay and get ready to celebrate!

With the addition of Souray, Pitkanen and Tarnstrom...not to mention Garon in net, the Oilers have made the defensive end far more soild than last year.

That's not really a fare comparison though. The Oilers didn't play the last 20 games of the year.

Who cares if it is good or bad, just as long as he brings his wife with him...

Seriously, though things look not so bad now.

Vets:

A wicked PP shot in Souray - 26 goals/64 points last season.

Steve Staios, a solid vet who gets the most out of his abilities.

Tarnstrom, a decent offensive D, with suspect defensive game.

Young guys:

Pitkanen, an extemely talented former first round pick of the Flyers(4th overall) who scored 46 points last year, while struggling with a very bad team(yes, worse than the Oilers overall).

Good young two way player in Smid entering second NHL year(a #1 pick of Ducks-9th overall).

Greene is the next Jason Smith, big, tough, stay at home D with a full season + a playoffs under him.

Young guys with some NHL time who will likely play some this year:

Gilbert - looked good in limited starts last year - looks to be a solid 2 way player.

Grebeshkov - another former first rounder(Kings?) with great skills, they have to find a way to get him ice time or he will go back to Russia.

Gives them a much better defense than last year. It will get scored on quite a bit, but it should put up a lot more goals than last year.

THUD
I give him a 7 outta 10 overall for now but as always we shall see once he's on the ice for the oilers.
Last year was just plain bad, he's got what we need special teams for penalty kills, that's what we need cause Kevin Lowe can get some speed or anything he needs up front.
I don't want to see the goalies suffer like they did last year 50 some odd shots on net and they only let one per period in as an average and never stop facing shots from the other teams forwards while we get maybe 25 shots on net total.
I hope they get a few more top players or atleast ones that this team can turn into NHL stars as the oilers only can.

Say yes to BOOBS more hot MILFS/wifes the better!

pfft fuck that

all you need is Zach

that man is EPIC

Souray will definately upgrade the Oiler's depth on the blueline and will likely be counted on as the Oilers top defencemen night in and night out. He should be garnering the most minutes on the team each game as well.
