I'm part of the ethnic minority so please put your "race" cards away.
Are ethnic minorities over-represented in the media?
It seems especially the case with American television/movies, you see so much of one single ethnicity that you'd think on a typical American street, the chances of you running into an ethnic minority would be greater than the ethnic majority.
Maybe it's not accurate to call these groups "ethnic minorities" anymore but to call them "ethnic equals" or something of the sort?
:dunno: |

I always get a kick out of corporate ads and such. Any time they show a group of people it's always the same.
1 white guy/girl
1 black guy/girl
1 brown guy/girl
1 asian guy/girl
Same thing with kids shows too. I don't actually care, I just find it funny how hard they try. |

I think the media caters to the target market.
For instance, when I watch Springer on my days off (2pm) it has many commercials that focus around debt reduction, vocational colleges, etc... and the majority of people in the commercials are of African American/Latino heritage.
Yet, when you watch a channel such as Discovery the commercials lean more towards caucasians.
I'm not making any statements on whether the marketing behind the commercials is correct and hitting the segment of the population that watches these shows, but I would assume that a broadcaster would do their homework and allow their advertisers to target a specific crowd (So that they can then charge more). |

^ I watch the noon news on Global many weekdays because we have a tv here at work and you can tell the commercials focus on women (more stay at home women watching tv at that time) because you can't make it through a commerial break without seeing an advertisement for tampons or something to deal with pms or a yeast infection. lol
Some days are bad when I'm trying to eat while I watch. lol
But to add to Reflux's original post, I agree, although I couldn't really care less, but what I do find annoying is the (IMO) over representation of gays on TV. You pretty much can't find a show (sitcom especially) without at least one gay person on it. Reality shows are even worse. There are tons of gay decorating shows I always see advertised. They totally make it seem that a major portion of the population is gay and that gay people are the only ones with fashion or decorating taste. That shit annoys me. |

There is still more "white" people in Canada then any other race, so white is still the majority, everything else is still the minority. If there were an equal amount, then yes, I agree with you.
Majority - is a subset of a group that is more than half of the entire group. (which is white people)
Minority - is a sociological group that does not constitute a politically dominant plurality of the total population of a given society. (which is any other race in canada/US)
I dont think its fair how some places will have to fill X amount of positions but X needs to be minority, X needs to be women, etc.
Whoever is more suited to the job is who should be hired, doesnt matter what race/sex you are.
As for the gays.... I actually I dont want to get into my opinions on that. |

Gays are fags. The one reason I'm glad there is a class, "minority" in the world. Nothing against ya if you're gay, just don't be a fag!
The reason there is a lot of media coverage re: minorities and majorities.. is because if there wasn't, racism and sexism would run rampant! Too many dummies in high places, to allow for that.
Our society is built on right and wrong, and unfortunately there are too many views on what is right and wrong, so what we have is the classification of minorities and majorities.. always trying to be balanced out. Of course they never will be (would negate the whole minority/majority thing all together) but it's just a part of life.
As sti guy said... if you're qualified.. you're qualified.. but again with the dummies in high places... it's more like, "If you ain't black/brown/red/white/yellow whatever,... you ain't workin fer me!" or.. "Only want hotties to work here" there has to be some legislation behind what's exercised... being , "Right" or "wrong"
That's my 2¢ |

hey reflux you know me pretty good so i hope i can type this correctly if not im sorry.
what i dont like about your question on ethnic minorities is this. What do you see when you talk to me? just another white guy right. but what if i told you that my grand parents immigrated to canada from the ukrane in the 1930's so my mom maried a guy whos grand parrents also immigrated from another "ethnic" country and now im just a white guy....hmmmmm with no ethnisity?
my question is this. "yours but reworded" dont you feel that way too much media is waisted on "visual" ethnic minorities?
this is canada and alberta the land of ALL people. may not happen but my theory has always been less emphisis on ethnic origon and more on being a CANADIAN with some character. ie. race.
dont you agree? |

Hot people get advantages in life. It's a fact. If you're ugly, it sucks to be you. Better hope you're a supergenious.
As for if you're not of an ethnic group you won't get hired...does that seriously happen anywhere? Honestly? I know people bitch about it a lot, but it's rarely founded on fact. Law enforcement is a common example. And yet despite people claiming Natives/Hispanics/whatever are being hired over white guys, depot is still full of white guys going through training. Yeah, they hire minorities, a large number of them comparatively speaking even, but 2 Natives, 2 Hispanics, 3 black guys, 6 women and 17 white males is still a heck of a large percentage of white males. Worst ratio you'll ever seen is 50% white males.
Then only other place you'll see that type of thing is the government. But walk into any government building and tell me how many minorities you see.
All the white males like to whine and moan about "equal opportunity", but it's like they're going through life with blinders.
It's not easy to immigrate to Canada. It takes A LOT of resources. But back in the old days it wasn't. A lot of people came here and spent every penny they owned to make it. And because they were black or whatever they weren't given the opportunity to go to a good school, get a good education, etc. Poverty is hereditary. If you're parents were completely broke, chances are you got a sub-standard education, which basically eliminated your chance of a scholarship. And since your parents couldn't afford it, you never got a decent education. Maybe you're IQ was nobel prize material, but if your folks couldn't get you decent books, supplies and an education, you were fucked.
Poverty begets poverty. And at the end of the day, the "non-whites" found themselves without the ability to land decent jobs and without the ability to put their kids through decent schools so they could get decent jobs.
Hence "equal opportunity". It's saying "Life has been shit for your people, and so we'll give you a chance to improve your station in life by looking for those who are bright despite potentially not having the best education, the highest marks, and the best background. Hopefully giving you this opportunity allows you to give your children a better life than you had and levels the field."
If Jews are still getting reparations and can still play the Holocaust card, then the less fortunate races who've lived in squalor and been treated like filth for far longer than the 6 years between 39 and 45 deserve a leg up.
Personally, I prefer "equal opportunity" to the "here, let's throw money at it" approach we took with Native reparations. That arrangement merely hurts both sides but there's no way to get out of it without hurting both sides even more. |

This equal opportunity that has been discussed applies to jobs that involve public service ie. police, fireman, etc.
If you have an education, meaning post secondary, the equal opportunity doesn't apply many private sector positions. It comes down to who is most qualified regardless of color. So I don't think your arguement of equal opportunity reflects all sectors of work, it is too broad of generalization.
my advice, is go to school and stop making excuses for your shortcomings. |

I hope I can scrounge up some cash to get an STdPWR ride like yourself, and then I can live at your mom's house too.
Also if I improve my computer skills I can become a senior member..... and then age and just be a pathetic 25-30 year old trying to impress the younger peers on this forum.
on second thought thats your style  |
