Since it's almost impossible to answer this without the "religion vs science" thing coming out, I'll just say it without reservation. The question should be "What is YOUR purpose in life". There is no single purpose.

I live to be happy, that's it. Of course, there's rules to that too... a sense of morailty means in the process I try not to hurt other people directly, indirectly, immediately, or eventually. But the biggest thing is to enjoy life for me, for sure.

It's a finite thing you've got here... once you realize that, your short time here gets a lot more meaningful.

Again, totally my opinion on the subject, don't take this like I'm shoving atheism down anyone's throat.

To live, is to suffer. To survive, is to find meaning in the suffering. ;)

Alright, enlighten me....why are we here and please no science? (recall I said to make babies in the woman thread)

I hope you don't think your here to buy a fancy car, and live in a big house, work tons' of hours so you can make lots of money.

If your early twenties, either live with your parents or just moved out in recent years you might still think like this. But I bet those older members would say differnet, and I bet us parents would stray even futher.

I am not a bible thumper, don't care to judge other people. The only thing I know is that I will DIE, and they only thing I leave behind is my family. Enjoy this while it lasts.

The question is "what is the meaning for you". Although eloquent, you didn't really say anything, haha.

I believe we are here simply to exist. Why make something simple complicated?

To me life is to be alive, and anything else I do such as interact or love other people or aspects of the collective unconscious, achieving immortality by creating ripples of change in this world, or simply having the best time I can by flipping my multilateral hyper-dimentional perspectives a hundred times a day to dissipating my positive energy back into this feedback loop is a bonus.

That is the optimist of me shining through. ;)

Peace, love and life. The ultimate trinity. Pretty much every existence question can be answered with one of those.

The purpose of life is to work for the man, so he can take all your money blow it on scandels and not fix any pot holes in our damn city. U work till your 50 years old by that time u can retire. well your best days of your life are already over cuz your ballsack is now hanging down to your knee's, going to the beach and checking out the "babes" is no longer cool, remember you are now old and creepy. u have no chance with a 20 year old. U spend the rest of yoour life hooked on viagra cuz u can no longer get a wood. pretty much life is a bitch. Too much work and not enough play lol.

life is about living if that makes anysense at all.

Krall
We are here because of the sun. We are here because here are apes, fish, ants, and trees.

The trees have no more purpose in life than we do.

Simple atomic reactions.

Sorry if it upsets you.... perhaps you should say a few hail marys or something. Better do it in your head though, so that god or whatever you call it (I call it conscience) can actually hear you.

Why would you ask this question?

i wonder why so many people believe procreation is the purpose of life? i'm not saying it's wrong, but there definitely are a lot of people on both sides of that fence.

Yep, procreation is merely a biological function. Along with several other purely biological functions, such as:
- the need to breath/respirate
- the need to eat/ingest
- the need to excrete

The average Canadian doesn't get a chance (or can afford) to retire well into his 60's.

Retiring at 50 would be a blessing.

Our most basic instinctive drive as humans is to perpetuate the species. Our desire to do anything other than survive and reproduce is secondary.

Kiddo
i was born to eat fried chicken and drink beer!!!!

Mobius
There is absolutely no purpose to life. The fact that we try to feel like our lives mean something, or that there is an afterlife, is pathetic.

Procreation isn't a purpose, it's an instinct for survival. Funny thing is, what's the purpose for surviving?

As Jamos said, we're just a part of an immensely complicated "network", for lack of a better term. At least we have the benefit of being the "virus" in said "network".

Mobius
And before someone counters with religion:

To even ask this question religion has to be discounted. Aside from being off topic, there is no way to prove that there is or isn't a God(s)/Afterlife/Higher Order.

Secondly, if religion does come into play, this question is already answered. Each religion is fairly specific as to what a person's purpose is in life.

SilverZ24
Almost no one has referred to religion though. Some people seem to think that if you think you are here to procreate, it is for religious reasons, but I don't believe that. Some people want a legacy and that is how they want to accomplish it.

I'm all about the economy and people need to procreate just to keep things going so I'm all for it. lol

This average of 1.5 kids per couple isn't cutting it guys! :D

Money is a human creation, like a hat, not its purpose. It's an unfortunate hang-up, like pride or status.

Exactly, completely irrelevant.

Krall
Money is derived from Society, and Society has been developed to prolong survival, and survival is the most basic instinct. The scary thing to me, is instinct, what is it, and from where?

You wake up when you wake up. Society - again - determins when you wake up. If you're a bum, you wake up whenever you want, as it would be in, "the wild."

I hate this thread.
