'Free' Dial-up ISP? - Click HERE for Original Thread

SilverFire
I need some geek memory help...

Way back (5+ years ago) I used to use a 'free' ISP. It would put a banner with ads across the top of your screen.

Anyway, I have a friend that is trying to deal with some extremely serious (life-threatening) psychological issues, and has commented over and over that she wishes she had internet access so she could get in contact with others in a similar situation (support-group style) like her doctor suggests, but she can't afford $10/mo. for internet service let alone a computer.

I have an old computer I was planning to throw out (the same one I used then as a matter of fact), and I was thinking I could load that software onto it and get it all set up for her, and have it still be useful. Problem is, I can't remember the name of the company or find one on the 'net, to get her the free internet.

Do any of you guys know of anything? With the advent of High-speed do you know for sure that it's all gone now?

Thanks!

sounds like your talking about 3web I believe was the name they went by.
not totally sure but I think they went out of business. I am sure you can find more information on google about it as for a free internet provider she could use the aol canada 3-12 month trial whatever they are offering currently.

Canada Post used to offer free dial-up too. Cancelled it a long time ago, I imagine 3web has also gone the way of the dodo bird. I'm not aware of any free dial-up's still around.

3Web is still around.. just not free anymore... $10/mo

DoubleDown
As far as I know, http://www.netzero.net still provides a free dial-up service. They charge $10/m for ADSL, but I think if you take a close look at the site there's free (albeit ad-supported) dial-up access.

Having said that, if she can't afford $10/m for internet service, can she afford the phone line required to get free dial-up? Her parents should really be fronting this money and supporting her... but I'm sure you've already explored that avenue.

Good luck.
