Rear End gearing - Click HERE for Original Thread

78Nova
With a large engine displacement and auto tranny I was looking for suggestions on rear diff. final drive gear ratios. I was thinking of going with a 3:83 ratio for much better acceleration than the stock 2:56's are providing. What do you guys think?

2ndgenlude
most people go with 3,83's. thats also what i would reccommend.

78Nova
I was told to go 4:10 but although the acceleration would be great the gas mileae would suck worse than it does already.

2ndgenlude
true. it depends on if you want to sacrifice the mileage or not. 4.10's are a lot quicker, but 383's are the middle of the road compromise

How about you tell us how high you're turning the motor, what trans you're running, and what size of tires.

If you're running 30" tires and want to shift at 8000, 3.83's aren't going to be tall enough. If you're running 26" tires and shifting at 6000, 3.83's might be too tall.

BAH run 2.2 or 2.9.... sure they'll leave you at the starting line... but you'll catch them in the end :P

100mph = 3100rpm in my car :P but just finishing my TQ curve and starting my hp curve

WorkInProgress
4.56's or go home.

SilverNeonRacer
There's a guy on here with 5.29 ... but that's a 4x4 :P

Nova.. prolly about 27-28" tires and 5000-6000 redline rpm.. maybe a touch higher...

78Nova
The redline on this stock engine is only 4250-4500. Using a 400 tranny and I haven't measured the new tire size. But with 2:56 in there it's nowhere near fast enough off the line. But I think that 4:10 would just make it unruly to control under throttle because I don't have really wide low profile tires.

Seriously I would suggest 3.92's, the 4.56 comment was just me being a donkey, and why DON'T you have wide tires?!

Get on that!

78Nova
I had wide tires, but I burnt them off.... So I got these ones for free. They'll be ok for now.

So buy your FD around your USUALL tires.. Not your temporary tires. That makes no sense.

78Nova
I'm going to buy my gears off of the fact that the need to be higher, and anything less than 3:73 is a waste of money and anything higher is a waste of gas. I called yesterday and from ALberta Driveline I can get the crown and pinion, bearings, auburn locker, and labour for $1500

charger_guy
what is your stall in ur tranny? See my 440 has a 3700 stall torque converter, and 3.91 gears with 26 inch tall tires. I found out i have killer accelleration, but its almost too much, so im upping it up to 28 inch tall tires. Remember if you are planning to do any engine mods (cam, intake, so on) Its a good idea to get a high stall torque converter and atleast 3.91 gears.
