This comes up way too often, so I thought I'd make a blanket thread for it to try and cut down on them. If you got caught speeding and you can't think of any specifics as to why you don't deserve the ticket, here's what you do.
Dress up nice, go to the courthouse on the date listed on your ticket, speak to the crown and plead whatever you want to plead. Throw yourself on the mercy of the court and see what they say. It may not be worth your time to go, but that's your ONLY choice.
There's no magic words you can use to get out of it. There's no magic clause that protects you. If it was late, tough. If you disagree with the limit, tough. If you think it's unfair because there were no other cars on the road, tough. The laws don't vary based on your opinions. You were speeding, you were caught, you can spend some time to hope for mercy or you can suck it up and pay. No one here will be able to tell you anything more than that.
Are you thinking of hiring a lawyer? You can try. For a speeding ticket it will probably be a waste of money. They'll cost more than the ticket is.
Thinking about POINTTS and TICKETS? They aren't lawyers. They are retired police for the most part. They generally can't get a ticket tossed for no reason either. But they often have some form of relationship with the crown and can maybe get a reduction.
Is there something written incorrectly on your ticket? Name, address, date, speed, whatever? You may or may not be able to get out of your ticket. This is the only time I might recommend calling POINTTS or TICKETS since they'll have better (and likely more current) court experience than I do in Alberta and will know how the crown usually views your specific errors. But until we get some EPS or RCMP officers on the forums, they're probably you're best option.
If there's something unique in your case: you don't think you were speeding, you think the officer tagged a different car, he said or treated you in a strange manner, etc, feel free to start up a thread and ask, but be sure to include those specifics.
The reason most threads on "I got a ticket I was dumb what do I do?" don't get a large response is because there is really no answer. There is no special advice other than "go try if you want, but don't expect much", and many guys feel if you're able to afford a car, gas, and insurance, and you feel you can risk speeding, than you can afford the tickets that come with it.
Good luck. |
