| am i mistaken or is the whitemud not a freeflow-merge system off the overpasses? i mean people are supposed to be "helping" you to merge by slowing down or speeding up accordingly if they are in the far right lane? another question would be shared lanes (in the center of the road that are ment to be taken by both directions for those turning left) are you allowed to stop in that lane if you cannot merge safely while turning left onto said road? i havent done a lot of city driving up to this point so i need some clarification  |

| from what i remeber reading in the alberta drivers manual u have the right of way when merging onto say a freeway. cars on the freeway are suppose to liek u said slow down to help u merge safely but i might be wrong this is how i remember it though. |

Cars merging left have the right of way. But if someone doesn't leave you room and you force it, you share the blame. "Free-flow" is not the right term, it is not "free flow" unless the merge lane goes on for a ways. Right of way doesn't mean you can go without looking, it means people are supposed to let you in...but they rarely do.
If there is a center turning lane that's shared for left turns from either direction, you should stop if you are not able to make the turn instantly. I don't know what your other options would be...turn anyways and crash? They put those lanes there specfically so cars stopped waiting to turn left don't hold up traffic. |

| thanks for the clarification.... guess i should have worded my question better about the shared lane i ment turning left onto the road which has the shared lane but then since you couldnt get into the inner left lane stopping in this center lane (not turning left off of the road as it is intended into lets say a parking lot) |

Oh. No, you can't do that. It's not a merge lane it's a turn lane. |

There's an alberta driving manual? I'd imagine it would say:
When merging, come to a complete stop, wait for all traffic to pass before merging, than slowly - as usual - accelerate to the maximum 50km/h, do not use your blinkers, do not spot check, and freely drive where you so desire, randomly stabbing the brakes.
