So my explorer has been acting up recently. at first whenever i changed gears the truck would rev to about 3-4000 Rpm before it would catch and actually move. now its even worse when i start my truck and put it into first it wont even move just rev the engine and if i take my foot off the clutch in first wile still stopped itwont even stall the engine.

sounds like a clutch problem, smoked, oil soked or busted hub. is it cable or hyd?

iMatt
I really couldn't say i didnt get the manual or anything when i bought it its a 93 ford explorer xl

91laserrs
sounds like you need a clutch

iMatt
Anyone have a rough idea of how much a clutch would be installed

Invalid Zero
$600-700 + parts.

I had the front tranny seal on my 94 Explorer go on me 2 weeks ago. I had them replace the torque converter while they had the tranny out anyway, and it was $806 to fix.

I took mine to LoCost Transmission on 82ave between 50st and 75st.

Is it a 4x4? If it is it could be an issue with the transfer case as well. If it was slipping into nuetral than that could cause it as well.

iMatt
Its not 4 By 4

I don't think it should cost $600-700 plus parts, maybe including parts. An OEM clutch should only be $300, then any decent shop should be able to install it in less than four hours. Add on another $60 or so to machine the flywheel and you're good to go.

4 hours to remove and re-install a transmission/transfer case in a 4x4 truck? Surely you jest.

anschutz_93
a rwd tranny in a truck takes about 3-4h to do a clutch. In a 4x4 you would be looking at 5-6 hours maybe more (from experiance i know 4x4 rangers are quite the bitch to work on... an explorer might be the same setup) . you wont find a shop less than 90/hr add in the $300 for the clutch +odds and ends, you would be at about 1g to have the clutch done. You obviously need a clutch tho so just phone around and see what you are quoted.

What time it actually takes the mechanic, and what the book time is on the job is a totally different story.

I've seen 4X4 OEM clutches run over 1100.

Alright thanks guys . on another note does anyone know the legalities of mechanics inspecting vehicles? i recently bought a vehicle from a pretty sketchy dealership and when he handed me the inspection paper it showed it was done at some shop. but the date had not yet been put on the paper the guy running the dealership dated it for me on the spot. everything had passed even the windsheld that has two cracks running along the whole windshield. today i went to check out this so called shop that had apparently done the inspection and the address ended up being some sketch motel on the outskirts of the city. thoughts?

It's not a 4x4, he stated that plain as day.

Take the vehicle back and tell him to give your money back or you'll get the cops involved. He committed fraud by handing you an inspection form from a shop that does not exist.

I agree.

Fazda
i would also have to agree. but if u did get a new clutch put in. u are looking anywhere around $700-$1000, depending on what else they find that needs to be fixed.

iMatt
Do you guys think that i should just get my money back for the truck or try and get them to just put in a new clutch cost free i got a warranty with the truck but im not exactly sure what it covers

Fazda
i will try and get them to pay to fix the truck. otherwise u are gonna take legal action. Do not let them get away with it thats forsure.

iMatt
Does anyone know if a safety inspection has to be done at a shop or can it just be done at the mechanics house. im just wondering because i bought this truck from a used car dealership exactly ten days ago and two days ago it just died on me and since the inspection paper was dated at the dealership when i bought it not at the shop where and when the actual inspection was done plus the fact that the mechanic shop address on the paper turned out to be a motel i just want to know if i get screwed by these guys if i can take legal action

Get your money back and go buy a car from a real dealer. Or even a private sale and have it inspected yourself as a condition of the sale. God knows what else is wrong with this piece of shit.

I'd report it to the police while you're at it. Scumbags like this should be shut down.
