I'd use brake cleaner. I use brake cleaner for everything because it's an excellent grease, oil, fuel, dirt, remover and it is completely harmless. I clean my work bench with brake clean and it works great. So I'd use brake cleaner to get that dirt and stuff off. Then if your looking for a shine, use some type of chemical you find at auto shops to make it look pretty or whatever.

EDIT: Brake clean eats oil and shit, so don't get it in your oil fill oil or dipstick or whatever it's possible to get it on/in.

1. Cover distributer
2. With hose (no nozzle), spray bay.
3. Use Simple Grean liberally, spray from different angles, all over
4. let sit for 10 minutes
4. scrub extra dirty areas
5. rinse again
6. Spray with foamy tire cleaner
7. Turn on t dry

here is what i do after i get my bay muddy from 4x4ing, go to the wand wash and when you get there spray engine cleaner of some sorts (i use castrol superclean) in your bay, then wash the rest of the vehicle first, and after that, wash out the engine compartmant. I find it works wonders on my truck, makes it look new  but use rinse when you wash the engine bay

It's basically to clean up the engine. Our shop uses it to find oil leaks. If a shit load of oil is coming from somewhere, then use that shampoo to clean up the engine to see exactly where the leak is. So I'm guessing it might work for you too :dunno:

Castrol super clean is THE BOMB!

I used some of that citrus degreaser from CT, and it got the majority of the crap off, but the castrol stuff gets EVERYTHING off.. too bad its a lil expensive.. So here's what I do....

1) find the cheap shitty engine degreaser, spray it on and let it sit for say.. 10 min while it eats away at the shit on your engine..
2) find a "Parts cleaner brush" and go over the parts you think need it..
3) Spray it off... Once water gets on the engine the degreaser is pretty. uhm useless.
4) bust out the castrol super clean or simple green, with the parts cleaner brush and go nuts
5) spray with a hose with no nozzle or one thats set to "sprinkle" :)

"Parts cleaner" brushes usually have stiffer bristles then your typical paint brush, It will last longer and not disentegrate with the cleaning solution.

depending on what year/make your car is.. it can deal with water. Ive sprayed all my crap directy with water and nothing has happened.. not even a sputter. Unless your car is carb'd, water isnt much of a problem.. and for the electrics.. They should be somewhat water proofed.. I mean if they're under your hood, they are bound to get sprayed with water... One way or another.

Edit: Where can one find bulk containers of castrol super clean and simple green? Im outta both :)
