i want to take out my spare tire and build a box for a JVC 12'' shallow sub into the spare tire hole in my trunk, in a 96 Neon, can anybody tell me the best way to do this?? i was thinking of
lineing the bottom with some kind of fibreglass or something and then fastening lightweight wood across the top with the sub in it and carpeting it the same color as the trunk carpet... but i dont know if that would even work or how it would sound
someone done this before? |

well i have done many both ways..... and to tell you the truth, there is very little difference.
easy way- take out your carpet liner of the trunk, trace it onto a 3/4" piece of mdf cut your sub hole in the middle. you may have to cut into 2 or3 pieces to mount in the trunk depending on the room you have. deaden the actual tire well with some sound deadner........... or tar paper from home depot.......... depending on the budget. lay down a couple tubes of silicone around the well, and screw the board into place. being sure that it is sealed well, and of course checking for gas tanks/ lines before screwing into place. as ghetto as this may come across, it works amazing and is alot lighter than a conventional box. keep in mind though.... removing this is a bitch.
hard way- building a fibreglass mold of the well squaring off the top of the well mould, glassing the mount for the sub to the mould, then building finishing panels.
easy way- 2-3 hours of work tops. around 30-40 bux in materials.
hard way- 5-6 hours guesstamated. 150ish bux. and stinky |
