When looking to buy a car, what are some things to look into?
All I can think of is getting a car inspection by a mechanic....is there anything else you can do? I have heard of doing something with the car's VIN number and such but never really found out much about it. Any suggestions appreciated. |

It depends on the kind of car your looking for. But for most cars I'd check for the usual:
Rust - Find out the area(s) that specific model are most frequent to rust out.
Inpesction - If its an older car ask if it's been recently inspected or comes with an inspection. If not, get one of those pre buy inspections done.
Mechanical - The usual, does it run good, brake good, handle good, does it need anything? etc...
I dunno what else you'd look for. Take the car your looking at for a good test drive - not just around the block. |

CarFax is what you do with the cars VIN number to search up the cars history :)
http://www.carfax.com/
EDIT: another simple thing to do is to put a magnet up to various parts of the body to see if it's been in an accident or not before, regardless of what the seller tells you. if the magnet sticks, then its all good :) but if not then that area that the magnet doesnt stick too usually means that it was repaired with bondo or something similar in most cases...of course this wouldnt work with your hundred thousand dollar supercars made of carbon fiber... |

| I would actually suggest carproof.ca over carfax.... carfax is alright but pay the extra and get carproof... I've had 2 vehicles searched by carfax then carproof.. carproof shows both had been in accidents and how much damage was done.. while carfax says their clean |

| Search for liens. If you buy a car with a lien on it, the lien is now your responsibility and you could lose your car. |

If someone has used a loan to pay for the car buy has not paid it off the Bank still owns the car. If you buy it and they stop paying for the loan, the bank will take the car. Even if you paid the guy.
Make sure when you take the car to a mechanic he does a leakdown and compression test on the engine. |

| or cheaper than carproof is go to registries with $30-40 and get a lein search, vehicle history (accidents, stolen, write off), and a milage history |
