Cleaning the Mass Airflow Sensor - Click HERE for Original Thread

GOT BOOST
Hi Everyone,

Out of curiosity, what do you use to clean the mass airflow sensor in your vehicles.

On the way back, my car was hesitating and stumbling. First thing that went through my mind was a turbo. However when I did not hear the usual loud bang, and squealing noise followed by free crop dusting for the city, I knew it was something else.

After the car stalled, I decided to pull codes. I was throwing a 3-1 Mass Airflow signal.

Now this could be:

1) Bad MAF Sensor needs to be replaced
2) something came loose in the wiring for my S-AFCII
3) The MAF Sensor could be very dirty.

I am betting on option 3 as prior to re installing my K&N Filter I cleaned it and dosed it with the filter oil like some valley girl applying perfume on her first date. I am starting to think that was not such a bright idea to use the squirt bottle rather than the spray. It looks like it there is still allot of fluid over where the filter sits.

I was thinking of using a can brake cleaner to clean it.

Do you folks use anything different?

So far my record for breaking stuff on my car is impressive for the two weeks it has been on the road! :D

Thanks for your help

Revive makes a product called Electronics Cleaner. Its in an aerosol can and is available at Part Source. That should do the trick if that is infact your problem.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the replies. I had purchased the Electronics cleaner. It smelled like and evaporated like brake cleaner.

After giving it a thourough cleaning, letting it dry, then reinstalling it, clearing the codes, I threw a code 31 again. It got to the point where it was so bad that when I stepped on the gas suddenly, the car would stall. When I pressed on the gas pedal slowly, the car would not stall.

I had decided to swap in Dan's Lexus AFM to see if it made a difference or if I threw codes. After cleareing the codes I turned the car over. No codes and the car ran nice. The ecu was still learning the fuel delivery so it was running a bit rough. The car did this the first time I started it after installing the motor. After a few kms, she was fine.

So, I am happy to see it is not the SAFCII. :D
Now I am looking for a new AFM. Hopefully I can grab a Lexus one. :D

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the advice. I tried alot of MAF cleaners, Carb cleaners etc on it. No such luck. The MAF is pooched. I think some PS fluid spilled out somehow and leaked into it.

I have a pre owened one on order from one of the guys in the club, as spending $1300.00 for a brand new one seems a bit excessive.

Haha man this last month has been bad for me as well. My spark plug pretty well exploded (soiled injector) and went through my engine and out the exhaust. Fucked up exhaust valve did a check of my turbo everything SEEMED fine... I ran it for a couple days and it was boosting fine and everything then I hear a ting ting ting. No more boost. I pull over take off my air filter on the turbo. Fins are dinged up slightly and there's scratching on the inside of the housing, and the turbo has seized. Get it towed home. Take the turbo apart. The compressor wheel is chewed to shit, I couldnt see that when I checked cuz it was down inside the housing. Musta thrown everything off balance...

Oh and for your question I use Methyl Hydrate 99.9% alcohol. Never had issues with it on my MAF and I have cleaned it 4 times. (oil issues which have been resolved)
